Transmission Temperature Gage

Transmission Temperature Gage
How is everyone monitoring their transmission temps while towing. All the transmission temperature gages I have come across requires you to drop the pan and drill a hole in it to mount the probe. Is this what you are doing? I don't know if I care for that too much.

Autometer makes a small manifold that is made specifically to splice into the hard lines from the tranny. I preferr mechanical gauges, so this makes installation easy. I have mine installed in the hard cooler line that runs from the tranny to the radiator/cooler. Although not critical, this is the hottest fluid in the system and what many preferr to monitor. I think it's more important to 'learn' your tranny based off where you install 'your' temp probe. The probes for the mechanical gauges wont fit in the port mentioned above...this method is the only option.
FWIW, it's not as simple as drilling a hole in the pan and tapping threads in the hole...can't do that. Too thin. What would have to be done is drill a hole and then have someone weld in a bung that was threaded for a temp probe. Only other option would be to ge a cool *** Mag Hytec pan that already has all that stuff in it!!!

Another plug for scan gauge II.
I contacted them and they basically told me that haven't seen a F150 AT that didnt have the a tranny temp probe sending signals the ECU. Pretty nifty device as it gives you tons of info on the truck.
Although I have one ordered so perhaps someone who has one should be more compelling.

I have to admit that for a device that does nothing, as in terms of enhancing performance and/or drivability, it is one of the best value for dollar mods. All of my friends are buying them for all sorts of different makes and models.
