Transmission Temperature Gage

How is everyone monitoring their transmission temps while towing. All the transmission temperature gages I have come across requires you to drop the pan and drill a hole in it to mount the probe. Is this what you are doing? I don't know if I care for that too much.

The 4R100 and 4R70W have a diagnostic port on the LHS of the trans close to the shifter linkage/actuator. The temp prob threads into that port. I have never dropped a pan to install mine, and I've used both Isspro and Autometer gauges. Most actually don't require the removal of the pan.

Thanks.
I have the 4R75E so I'll have to look to see if a diagnostic port is on that one.

In my '07 w/ the 4R75E, my ScanGauge II displays a transmission temperature.

If you have the auxillary trans cooler I have seen the probe installed "in-line" on the intake side of the aux cooler. Looked like a slick setup to me.

Autometer makes a small manifold that is made specifically to splice into the hard lines from the tranny. I preferr mechanical gauges, so this makes installation easy. I have mine installed in the hard cooler line that runs from the tranny to the radiator/cooler. Although not critical, this is the hottest fluid in the system and what many preferr to monitor. I think it's more important to 'learn' your tranny based off where you install 'your' temp probe. The probes for the mechanical gauges wont fit in the port mentioned above...this method is the only option.

FWIW, it's not as simple as drilling a hole in the pan and tapping threads in the hole...can't do that. Too thin. What would have to be done is drill a hole and then have someone weld in a bung that was threaded for a temp probe. Only other option would be to ge a cool *** Mag Hytec pan that already has all that stuff in it!!!

Thanks Galaxy, I think the Autometer gage is the way to go. I didn't like the transmission pan drilling thing anyway.

Another plug for scan gauge II.

I contacted them and they basically told me that haven't seen a F150 AT that didnt have the a tranny temp probe sending signals the ECU. Pretty nifty device as it gives you tons of info on the truck.

Although I have one ordered so perhaps someone who has one should be more compelling.

SG II is what I use. Took me a grand total of 30 minutes to set it up. That was deteriming best location, reading the manual and typing in the extra codes. Very simple to install and great device.

I have to admit that for a device that does nothing, as in terms of enhancing performance and/or drivability, it is one of the best value for dollar mods. All of my friends are buying them for all sorts of different makes and models.

Monitoring Trans and other temp readings...

My EDGE Evolution takes care of that task for me.

Edge company also makes a gauge only setup called the Insight. It is able to display 4 parameters just like the Evolution only without the tuner.

Me too, one of the 4 things I monitor.

I had an Autometer gauge put in back when I was towing a lot. I also still have an Edge used as gauges in case I need it.
