I'll take my 2003 5.4L with the 6-speed trans in my old truck over the new one. 15 more ft-lbs of torque at 1000rpm higher and 800 pounds more weight for the 2009 5.4L over my 2003 2v 5.4L. Now if I could get that 6-spd....
As mentioned, the 2009 300hp 4.6L is 3-valves per cylinder and you have 2. You can rather easily get 50 more hp out of your engine >4000rpm, but that is not so useful for most people. Enjoy what you got. When it it time to upgrade trucks, get the 5.4L.

Its all about airflow, VE, cam timing, compression, computer tune, the works. My 1998 4.6 is rated at 220 hp.
If you find out what is different, you can probably upgrade... like the 3v heads, cam, everything. Or you can spec your own cam, and modify your existing heads to flow more.

As they mentioned, the 09+ trucks have an optional 3 valve 4.6L. It is based on the 2005+ Mustang GT motor, but was refined for more torque for use in the truck. The motor should be comparable to the 4.8L Chevy, but the 5.4L definitely needs a boost in power if they want to keep it competitive with the big V8s offered in other halftons. Then again, I would gladly spot Toyota 80hp if that means we get a better all around truck.
