Just a thought after the fact - would 101 have been a better bet than 5?

Good question. I think 101 would have added at least 50 miles and 1 hour +- to the drive between LA and Gilroy.

From I-5, the OP would have also had another grade to cross at Hwy 152 (Pacheco Pass), but it's not as bad as the Grapevine.

101 has a lot of rolling terrain and also has one serious grade (the Cuesta grade, which is a 7% climb), but nothing quite as bad as the grapevine, IMO. With a big load, the rolling terrain could get annoying compared to the valley floor of I-5.

Besides the extra distance and rolling terrain, 101 tends to have a lot more slowing down/speeding up and local traffic on it. It goes through many towns between LA and the Bay Area. Getting through LA and Santa Barbara on the weekend can be stop and go, even on the highway. Doing 30 minutes of stop and go would be brutal on tranny temps as well!

For me, it would matter on how close to 101 or 5 the trailer was when it was being picked up.

6500 lbs seems pretty high for an empty 21ft toyhauler..... are you sure thats correct?

edit: looked on the website and says 6030 so 6400 is probally right wow thats a heavy little trailer. I'm glad I don't have toys to take camping 6300lbs gets you alot of trailer ( near 30ft)
