Engine RPM while towing

Recently towed my new trailer with my 2010 F150 5.4 and noticed that while climbing hills and fighting strong winds in Arizona that my tach was reading 4500-4700 RPMs after the downshifts. The truck seemed to handle the load fine, but am curious what is a safe RPM for this truck for extended periods.

The engine computer will protect itself. Redline/limiter is in the 5700-6000rpm range. As long as the oil is warmed up, no worries about 4500-4700rpm. That is what is is designed to do. it will just suck lots of fuel doing so.

i pull a 7600 travel trailer occasionally, running with O/D off it rev ~3000rpm, on steep hills it will drop into second and run close to the rev limiter with no problems. the biggest hill i've personally run is the "dolly parton bridge" around Atmore AL, its 7 miles long with a 3mile main span at 10% incline. i was turnin 4500rpm the whole way up, managed to keep 60mph.

Gentlemen,

Thank you for your replies, it sounds like my experience was not out of the ordinary. I was just a little surprised that a V8 would rev that high.

Thanks again,

Welcome to mod motors. They have to rev to be happy. 4500 is nothing for prolonged time. I would be much more worried about trans temps then 4500 RPM.
