Trailer Service Reminder
For those towing their own trailers:
Don't forget to service/inspect or have your trailers serviced and inspected every year; even if they aren't towed.
Things to look for if you are servicing your own trailer:
Tire tread and abnormal wear -indicates tire separation or a bent axle
Tire weathering or oxidizing causing cracks that lead to tire failure (tires last 5 years from the date of manufacture even if they aren't driven on)
Broken or missing light lenses
Faulty lights that aren't working
Trailers with brakes- Emergency break-a-way system operating and battery at 12v.
Safety chains not worn from dragging
On flatbeds and utility trailers- decking in good repair-not dry rotting
Coupler functioning correctly and not hanging up
Suspension component wear and excessive movement in bushing areas
Electric trailer plug connections free of corrosion and in good mechanic condition
Other service items:
Checking and replacing grease seals if any grease if passing (cheap insurance to protect trailer brakes)
Cleaning and re-packing wheel bearings
Adjusting brakes (different procedure than in automobiles)
Flushing brake fluid in hydraulic surge systems
Treating wood decks on utility and flat bed trailers
Charging break-a-way battery is system doesn't include charging system
If you have any other trailer service questions or concerns feel free to post them here or PM me.
