Question What is the Ford F150 manual telling me?

This is what is in the manual:

Max GVWR 7400
Max Loaded Trailer Weight 11,300
Payload 1930
Max GCWR 16,900

Is it saying I cannot have the max loaded trailer weight because I would exceed the Max GCWR? If so why not have a lower Max LTW?

What it's saying is that you can tow a 11,300 lb trailer as long as your truck only weighs 5,600 lb... Good luck with that!

The other thing it's saying is that if your truck weighs 7,400 lb you can tow a 9,500 lb trailer.. Good luck with that!

I have no clue as to where these actual 'tow rating' numbers come from, but if you are intending to tow a travel trailer, don't figure on getting too close to those 'tow rating' figures.. And why would you want to tow something that weighs almost twice what your truck weighs??

You have to decide what 'rating' you wish to follow when determining your own 'tow ratings' and go from there...

Some only look at the GCWR.. Some only look at the "tow rating". Some realize they are limited on actual payload weights and go from there..

The best thing you can do is drive your truck across some weight scales and see where you are as you sit right now.. That's your ACTUAL weights and beat anything listed in the manual or the Internet...

Good luck!

Mitch

It's telling you that the total weight of the truck and tongue weight should not exceed 7400#. That is going to be the real world single limiting factor. Load up the truck with what you will be taking with you (luggage, people, other cargo in the cab and bed, a full tank of gas) and run it over a scale. Subtract the weight from 7400 and that's your max recommended tongue weight. You can increase the capacity by properly packing everything you can into the trailer instead of the truck and bed.

Smile Thanks

Gentlemen: Thanks for the clarifications. I know a lot more now than I did before I posted the first question.

Question I have another question

If the towed vehicle has Dry Axle Wt = 5640, Dry Tongue WT = 920, would the tongue weight go up proportionately? In other words, 920/5640 = 0.163. Then if the loaded axle weight was 7600, you could multiply that by 0.163 and get 1239, the new tongue weight.

Not exactly. It depends on how you load it. It could be higher or lower.
