1st time tower

Just got my first truck (F-150 Lariat, 4x4, EXT, 4.6L) I bought it used and have absolutely no idea what my towing capacity is. Any help out there?

That should be in the owners manual if you have it. Good place to start looking. I'm sure somebody with a similar truck will be along shortly.

Here are a couple tables:

http://www.ford-trucks.com/specs/2002/2002_f150_1.html

This is what Ford claims for towing MAX towing capacity. The figures are pretty close for alll years with the same configuration. This IS NOT YOUR towing capacity. You need to subtract the actual weight of your vehicle and cargo from your GCWR (the listed total capacity your truck can lug down the road including the weight of your truck, trailer, passengers, cargo and happy meals).

It looks like this:

GCWR
- weight of vehicle
- weight of driver, passengers, and any additional cargo

= available towing capacity

Here is a link for more description of terms.

Looks to me like your GCWR is 6,500 - 7,800 for a std tranny or 10,000-10,500 for an autmatic (unless you have the heavy duty model with 7 lug axles). Your truck weighs about 4,600lbs empty. Check the figures for your specific rig.

This is what Ford claims your maximum ratings are. Remember you must have the proper equipement to handle the weight, including reciever hitch, ball, braking etc.

Happy towing.
