I have a 2000 F150 4.2 5 sp. and a 2002 F150 4.2 auto. Both pull my boat with ease. it weighs appr. 2000 lbs with all of the gear. I also pulled a Mustang with a dual axle trailer over a 1000 miles with the 2000 F150. Have to pull a Uhaul the same distance with the 2002 F150. Still wish that I had at least a 4.6 V8 though.

You'll only appriciate a larger motor when accelerating or towing through the hills & canyons.
Automatics are typically rated for a higher load due to the Torque Convertor, which is designed to multiply the engine's torque (2x), when it is unlocked. Locked = 1x engine torque. Unlocked (slip) = 2x engine torque = heat.
I have a buddy that tows a 19' Champion (~4kip) with a '92 Dakota w/ 4.3l & Auto. By the manual, the truck is rated for the load.
