You can kill two birds with one stone by getting a tuner for your truck. You can alter the shift firmness, and it will give you any performance increase, but I don't think it's recommended for all out use while towing.
You can contact the best source on this site and speak directly with him:
Mike Troyer
He can answer any/all questions you have concerning tuners and many other items you may want to consider adding.
But before you call him, you may want to spend a little time reading some of the thousands of posts he has left already. Use the search at the top of the main page to bring yourself closer to the topic you're looking for. Here is one of many.

I have read a review found here regarding a cheaper alternative to the Factory Tech Valve Body that accomplishes the same end result. If I can contact someone personally about the product, i will probably choose this alternative to save money and improve my 95k mile transmission. I have the exact same truck as you bigtruck. Within the past week and a half I put catback Magnaflow SI/SO exhaust, a Hypertech perf. module, and a FIPK GenII. Considering the stock setup I had before, it's a kick in the pants performance-wise...I love it
I hear a lot about the power programmers, but for our years, the only thing the Hypertech programmer has to offer that the chip does not is a shift firming option. I bought the Hypertech chip (also found in the Product Reviews section here) for 100 dollars off Ebay. I don't know what the Superchip can do, but if it retails for $250+, I still sure am glad I bought the power module chip. For the 200+ dollar difference I can put that money into a tranny mod that offers more than the programmer can do.

from what i gather from reading these forums is that the FTVB is still the factory valve body that goes back in. the difference is that the kit is pre-installed at/or by factory tech. i assume that is why they charge a core charge of $X.XX to return your stock valvebody back to them.
i am anxiously waiting for someone to correct me if i am wrong though b/c i don't want to mislead anyone...
