Tranny trouble resolved: OD fail, '04 F150XLT (4.6L, auto)
2004 F150XLT (new body, Aug 04 build) - 4.6L/auto/air. 8300 miles since Oct 04 purchase.
During a weekend trip to Reno, I lost my overdrive. 'OD Off" indicator continuously lit. (A few weeks before that I lost it briefly but after parking and restart the fault disappared and truck drove normally - wrote it off to a 'weird condition'.)
Reset the computer a couple of times but fault persisted. Also, coming back over the Sierras there were some other RPM-vs-load shifting issues but that could've been due to a reset PCU recalibrating itself during significant altitude changes and road grade changes. Once back down out of Sierras normal driving resumed but OD still missing.
Later used tool to read fault code and it said (forgot the #) that there was "Shift Solenoid A failure".
Got it to dealer (Magnussen Ford, Fremont, CA). They called back, told me it was a valve body problem and that Ford was telling dealer to NOT to work on valve body and Ford would instead send (swap) a complete new valve body.
It seems that something in the valve body may have cause the shift solenoid to fail, and the solenoid was not the root cause of the problem, but a reaction to it.
While I have a basic warranty Ford did rent me a car on their nickel for the few days it was outta commission. Was treated very nicely by dealer. (BTW this was the dealer I bought truck from, not the dealer closest to my home.)
Truck drives A-OK now, and the PCM _may_ have been updated (reflashed) too - seems to have smoother shifts than when new (and when it was still presumably OK).
Has anyone else had this problem (bad valve body in '04 F150 tranny) too?
Were there further problems on the _repaired_ transmission???? Have any of these replacement valve bodies (or underlying solenoids) failed again???
