You have solved you own problem. It’s not the truck you hear whining, its your girlfriend! Try driving it without her in the car and I am willing to bet that the noise goes away. I used to think that my truck was making an intermittent crunching sound. Until I figured out it was the wife eating a full size bag of Doritos’s in her quest to become the largest women in town.

Are you sure you aren't hearing 1st gear whine. Most auto's from any auto company with an automatic trans whine a bit in 1st gear. I had an 02 FX4 with 5.4 and 4R70W and it whined like hell when it was in 1st gear, then in second the whine goes away. My 79 Chevy Caprice had a TH350 auto in it and 1st whined like hell. Listen to a 2500 Chevy Cargo Van and you'll again hear a loud a** whine when it is in 1st gear. Its normal and isn't hurting anything.

Just an idea...could the clunk be excessive play in the U-joints? My wifes Grand Cherokee made a clunking until I changed the U-joints out.

I doubt its the Ujoints, it feels like the tranny trying to shift. plus its rare that it does it...like once every two weeks. not saying i have it written on a calnder or anything . it'll do it when I barely stop but I'm still rolling and accelerate it does it sometimes. Hell, the whining could be normal like you said, it might just seem louder to me. i notice alot of things about my rides that most dont...
