Got the truck back yesterday from Ford. The overdrive light is now fixed. I needed the following parts: Speed Sensor, Speedometer gear, Oil pressure switch, 4x4 out put shaft gear, 2 seals, and a Trany flush and filter.
It only cost $548.70, which isn't that bad becuase I was quated $800.00 something at another garage.
They also fixed the crusie control (recall) with a new wiring harness.
So everything is running good. The truck shifts better, and seems to get up to speed a lot quicker now...

My O/D light flashes so I pulled out the code and it was:

P0741 TCC Performance/Duct stuck.

I know it's talking about the torque converter but with what stuck and is it stuck open or closed???? I just bought the truck from a private owner who just rebuilt the tranny 800mi. ago. Fortunally the tranny is still under warranty so I am heading out there to get the code checked and fixed for free but for future knowledge has anyone come accross the same code and what was the fix and the price.
Thank you for your time.

I got the same blinking OD light this morning, but I have a few different problems. After the light started blinking, I pulled over and checked the fluid. It was fine, and I shut the truck off and let it sit a few mins, and started it back up. I was towing an empty trailor (about 1000lbs), going down the interstate, when I lift off the throttle, the speedo jump up maybe 2-6mph. Then I started noticing that when the tach stayed the same, the speedo was jumping around. The light never came on again. I'm also getting the rough shifting and the transmission is hunting gears at low speeds. Also, after stopping (food or gas) it would shift fine for a few mins, then it'd go back to shifting rought.

I guess I'll drop it off at the dealer in the next week and see what the problem is. This is on a 97 5.4L 4x4 btw. Any opinions are welcome.

Luckily the owner of my local autox shop had a scanner that pulled the transmission codes (the local dealer wanted $80!). Codes P1728 (trans slip) and P0503 (vehicle speed sensor). He cleared the codes, but I'm still having the same problems (inaccurate speedo and rough shifting). I'm going to call the dealer tomorrow and see how much they want for a factory speed sensor and see if that solves the rough shifting.

My question is, where is the speed sensor located? I've seen people post trans and some say rear end. Is it both or one or the other? I plan on picking up a manual in tomorrow while I'm out as well. Thanks.

the vss is on the driver's side of the tailshaft of the transmission. it's held on with one nut.

i replaced mine once because it cracked and was leaking fluid from the transfer case. the second time it started craping out on me and giving choppy readings. i didn't replace it the second time, instead i put the sensor in a bowl of oil and hooked up a drill to the shaft. i turned it back and forth for a few minutes. this was about a year ago and it's worked great since then.

i'm thinking your slipping code is related to the vss.

it was about $75 at the dealer here.

Well I stopped by today and picked up a new speed sensor for the differential. Well I just pulled the old on out, and it looks different. Can someone look at the pics below and tell me if its just a new style or a completely differnt sensor:

Old (P/N F37F-9E731-AA):

New (P/N F85F-9E731-AB):

Mine was a "missed 2-3 shift".

I had the 6yr/100K warranty. The guy at the dealership knew what the problem was before he had the pan off.

He had a whole box of broken accumulator springs on his bench.

He asked me if I had the warranty. I told him, then asked why. He told me with the warranty, he replaces just about everything. Without the warranty, he replaces only the parts directly affected, to soften the "blow".

BTW, he also said the flashing O/D light means "Run, don't walk" to a shop. The trans goes into a high pressure, "come home" mode to ensure solid shifts. It will tear itself apart if run in this manner for too long.

HTH, Steve

midtenn, if you have a '97 you bought yourself an abs speed sensor that will do nothing for the o/d flashing. the sensor on the diff rarely goes bad.

get a refund for it if you still can.

Yeah, I spotted it tonight while I was under the truck putting the old sensor back in the diff. I'll run by the dealership tomorrow and take the ABS sensor back in, and pick up a trans speed sensor. I appreciate all the help.

Well I swapped out the one on the trans and the one on the diff, neither solved the problem Speedo is still slow to react and jumps up when I get off the gas. I guess it is time to take it to the professionals. Sucks, b/c I haven't even owned the truck 1 month.
