overdrive blinking codes

My overdrive is blinking and my transmission shifts terribly while it is blinking. I went to autozone to get the codes pulled, but their machine couldn't read that type of code and what they checked came back as Pass. What do I need to do, and where do I need to go to get these codes? Thanks for your help.

Ford dealer. 70bucks. Sorry but its the way to get the "deep" codes on these OBD II trucks. Welcome to the forums though!

I called the Ford dealership and the guy said he can pretty much tell me that I need a transmission overhaul. He said they would get the codes and then put that towards the repair.
Should I go ahead and have them do this work, or should I go to someone else besides Ford, like a transmission place?
What would you guys recommend I do at this point. My overdrive thing blinking is becoming more frequesnt so I need to do this soon. Thanks again for your help.

I wouldn't go to a place that says I need a rebuild without knowing what's wrong. It could be a minor wiring problem, or a sensor that's going bad. There are about 50 things that could make the OD light flash.

I would either go to a different dealer or to an independant shop that has a scan tool that can read Ford specific codes. Not all scan tools can, as you found out at the parts store.

Yeah, pay the diagnostic fee FIRST to see whats wrong. Post up what they find and we'll go from there.

Vss

Do the 150's have a Vehicle speed sensor like the 250-550's on the axle pumpkin?

Does your speedo not work very well before 30 MPH?

We've had these go out on our higher mileage Super-Duties and it causes the same symptoms. Bad Shifts, Flashing OD light, But the speedo doesn't work well at lower speeds.

I don't know about the speed censor thing. The speedo works fine at all speeds though.

I took my truck to the Ford dealer this morning and they are checking the codes. I am then going to take it to a transmission specialist for an estimate on the work.

Should I try to find a local transmission shop over a national chain type shop?
Any suggestions?

Well the national chains are independantly owned, so the quailty depends on the perticular shop. Just ask for recommendations.

That same problem happend to me yesterday. I had been driving for about 45 minutes at around 45-55 MPH . The Overdrive light started to flash. I shut the truck off, the shut off then came back on when I reached 58 mph. I called ford, they said it could be a crimped wire in the shift or a speed sensor or it might be the whole transmission.
I have an appointment with Ford on Tuesday with the transmission technition. I will write more once I find out what the issue is...

It means something in the trans or torque converter clutch is slipping. You should get it looked at, and it may need a rebuild. Slipping clutches don't last long.

It has been posted that the OD clutches are fairly weak. I had a different code, but the blinking light, but so far I am milking it for a while.
I disconnected the battery for some other work, and the blinking light went away a few months ago.
I can't see paying for code reading, as most trans shops will do it no charge, and give you a free estimate. I will add, in all fairness I went to a shop that I would or will have do the work eventually. LOL

if the torque converter is slipping i would suggest getting the fluid flushed and changed with new mercon v fluid. if this still doesn't fix it then it is time for an overhaul.

if this happened to me i would try a transmission additive that claims to fix slippage. sometimes the additives will make the transmission work fine again for years before the symptoms come back and sometimes they do nothing or work for 2 weeks. i've used the lucas stuff in mine and it worked pretty good.

some will say that the additives do more bad than good and do other damage but the way i see it the transmission is coming out and getting rebuilt anyway and it's not going to be much cheaper now than a few years from now. i would rather spend 2000 in 3 years than 1800 now.

my transmission started slipping really bad between shifts a couple of years ago. everyone said i needed a rebuild. i added lucas transmission fix and it was fixed instantly. after a couple of months i decided to put a shift kit in it and it has been working great since then.

I had same problem this summer o/d light blinking, shifting problem on my 98 f150, thought it was tranny prob. but before I took it in to tranny shop, I disconnected the battery for an hour and let the pcm chip re-learn,, problem went away, been drive great now for 3-4 months,, might give it a try, may save you some big bucks
