Transmission & Amateur Radio

I have a amateur radio unit in my f150.. My question is " if I use it, I can not be over 25 watts. If I do the transmission light comes on. the code I get is P0781 (1-2 Shift Error).. Also it is only when i'm done talking on the radio..

Sounds like some RFI, when the code comes up, does the trans actually exhibit a 1-2 shift error?

I once had a late 80's Chevy work truck with some kind of radio in it. When I keyed the mike, the speedo would drop to 0 ... if you had the cruise set, the throttle would open wide trying to get the truck back to the set speed!

Years ago, I had a car with an aftermarket cruise control - whenever keying up my CB mike the cruise would disconnect.

You have a RF issue somewhere - either your radio itself is not shielded well or something is not right with your antenna system.

When I had my problem, our shop had just installed a 'foot meter' (accurately measures distance in feet/meters/miles while driving) to the electronic speedo. I took it back to the shop and they shielded the wires for this installation and the problem went away.

I've got a 65 watt Yaesu FT-2800M... and I've operated at full TX for 2 minutes at a time and never had any problems on my '07.

What band are you using? My Yaesu is a 2 meter only...

By the way, nice meeting another HAM.

If you're having RFI problems in your vehicle, you're probably not grounded well enough. You'll want to get 1/2" grounding straps and ground everything together. The bed, the gas tank, the transmission, engine... Everything that is metal should be grounded.
