transmission fluid: Mercon ATF or Mercon V ATF?

just a little concerned. truck is an 05 V6 5-speed transmission. i'm getting ready to change the fluid, but quite unsure what is the correct fluid to use. i went to a local (honest) Motorcraft dealer. i asked what i needed and they eventually called Ford Dealer. Ford Tech said my tranny uses a Mercon V. i checked the manual (yeah forgot about it) and it says Manual Transmission uses regular Mercon (w/out the V), and that Mercon ATF and Mercon V ATF are NOT interchangeable. Could someone please shed some light on this? and why is that most labels only advertise "Automatic Transmission". i have yet to see a one that says "Manual Transmission".

Amsoil ATF. That's the recommended Amsoil fluid for your tranny and is fully compatable with either recommendation, so you're safe with this product either way. Not to mention it's a superior product

Regular Mercon for the stick. MerconV for the auto.

All Ford applications that previously specified Mercon have been changed to specify Mercon V as of about two years ago. The TSB was a frequent subject of conversation.

Mercon has been discontinued by Ford and is no longer licensed for production.

That is the correct fluid for your manual transmission.

If you look in your owner's manual, you will find that automatic transmission fluid is the specified lubricant for your manual transmission.

The information in his owner's manual and on the dipstick has been superceded.

Mark is correct, that is the now-correct fluid.

Please re-read the first sentence of my last post. It is explicit. Whether you have a manual or auto is not relevant, the word "all" covers it.

The mercon V/mercon confusion/debate really only applys to the automatics anyway. Your stick ain't gonna care. The fluid is only there for lubrication. Heck, GM syncromesh fluid is a popular upgrade for the M5OD-R2.

It is not "crappy". The new stuff is simply improved.

I wouldn't worry about it if you're using what was originally specified.

Nope, both of my M5OD-R2s are perfectly happy with plain ole Mercon, but some are pickier than others. If you have hard shifts, try a Syncromesh fluid.

The manual is nowhere near as picky as the automatic. I have Pennzoil "universal" ATF in mine and it's happy.

Steve, as long as we are picking posts apart, manuals don't have dipsticks.

The thing that a high quality synthetic fluid will do for you in a manual tranny is slightly smoother shifting and engagement of gears, and much longer service life of the fluid. Synthetics are much more tolerable of temperatures also, but that's not usually the case in a manual.
