05 F150 5.4 trans issue...help!!

Today my wife went to drive my truck and said it seemed like it didn't want to go anywhere...

I took it for a drive and it is slipping terribly. When I step on the gas, the engine revs but the truck only slightly picks up speed. I read different posts while searching this issue, and some mentioned that the problem might go away when the O/D is disabled. Mine stays the same. I DO have engine braking when downshifting, and I noticed the trans works fine in reverse... (which I'm thinking would rule out a torque converter, right?)

Any ideas?

Thanks,
Greg

BTW, my paperwork for the truck lists the trans as a 4R75E...

Is the O/D light flashing?

You should see if any codes are being thrown.

In any event, it sounds like the forward clutch pack is shot.

No lights flashing... O/D off light comes on when button depressed, but not flashing...

Stupid question, but did you check the fluid level and smell it to see if it's burnt?

It really sounds like low fluid or a problem with the filter. You really have to be careful on how you check the fluid. I have seen very professional mechanics misread it. You need to check it a couple of times with the engine running. Wipe the stick every time. You are looking for the bottom of the lowest dry mark and not the top wet mark. It's darn hard to read sometimes. I have been fooled myself.

Here is a pic of the dipstick... I can replace the fluid and filter if you think that's help, but I'd hate to spend the money on it just to find out the trans is shot...
Thanks for your help!

You could drop the trans pan and see if the filter is still in place. That would cost you about 4 qts of fluid.

Yeh, maybe I'll give that a shot tomorrow. I guess I'll see if there's glitter in the fluid and if there is, I won"t go any farther...

Well, I dropped the pan, and the filter was laying in the bottom of the pan... there was no metal shavings just some normal stuff on the magnet, so I put a new filter on and filled it back up, then took 'er for a ride...

Same thing, only worse. For a little bit 1st seemed to be not as bad as 2nd & 3rd, but it too faded to the point I didn't know if I was going to make it back to my driveway. Reverse is still strong. Any other ideas?

I don't know if its worth it to invest in this truck, I have a rear main seal leak, a transfer case leak and a ft pass axle leak. The VCT's are clacking away, it has 139K on it...

With all those issues, I'd cut your losses and get another truck.

I agree with glc.

See how much a dealer would give you on a trade.

A new transmission is a $2k job and that's being conservative. Plus the VCT's are another whopping expense. You've got likely a $3,500 repair bill if not more.

How does the body look? New trucks cost a ton of money. Best scenario might be to sell it on craigslist as a mechanic's special and buy something else. But, if the body looks great, it may be worth it to fix it. Has it spent it's life in the frozen north?

Is the truck in good condition otherwise or is it pretty worn out?

Sounds like you are having a lot of issues.
