4R70W or 4R100? What's the difference?

Hello Fellows this is my first time writing
so stay with me. I have a 1/99 build on my truck and it has a 4R100 I installed a heavy duty reprogrammer from transgo the part number is HD2E4OD so they are the same tranny. I purchased a 8200# tow package and my truck was shipped to Texas it is a F150. Not a F250 you can purchase special options from the factory.

Factory Tech...
Your information is great! Good to have a Ford EXPERT on board!
I do have one comment though, I have a 1998 F150 4x4 bought new in CA...and guess what? I do have the 4R70W trans...this was confirmed by my trans shop, when I had the 30K service! We had to ID the trans before we ordered the police shift kit. My guy said definately a 4R70W...same as in the Crown Vicky Cop Cars!

Hmm now, I think there are about 6-8 different converters, if you can give me ALL the info on your ID tag, (drivers side just forward of the extension housing) I can tell you just exactly what ya have and give ya my opinion.
The 4R70W, like the 4R100 comes in several different models, one of which is the Police model, but your truck definitely doesn't have that one, it's a Sharonville Transmission and we don't build any truck 4R70s. I think, (but everytime I try to get this right I screw it up) that up till 97 all 5.4 F-150s got 4R100s, then in 98 NONE of them did and statrting in 99 only CA Emissions and Lightnings did, which is how it is now. And I'm at least positive that in '00 models only the Ontario Rocket Sleds and the CA Emissions get them.
The 4R70 is a good box though, I like it for what it is. (but do note, that I have a 4R100, m'self)

As it looks
'97...4.2/4.6 -> 4R70W
5.4 -> E4OD
'98...4.2/4.6 -> 4R70W
5.4 -> E4OD
'99...4.2/4.6 -> 4R70W
5.4 -> 4R70W (F-150 w/o CA emissions)
5.4 -> 4R100 (F150 w/CA emissions or F-250LD)
2000 gets complicated...
2000...4.2/4.6 -> 4R70W
5.4 -> 4R70W (F-150 w/o CA emissions, late models w/CA emissions)
5.4 -> 4R100 (F150 w/CA emissions (early)or F-150 w/7700lb GVWR)
2001 SuperCrew
All engines....4R70W
I live in CA...and believed that all 2000 model 5.4 trucks would have the 4R100. WRONG. I test drove a 2000 5.4L supercab 4x4 and a 2001 5.4L 4x4 supercrew last weekend. Both were fresh off the transporter. Both had transmission codes of "U" (4R70W) on the info plate in the LF doorjam and both had CA emissions. I looked under both and both of them had the smaller 4R70W transmission (looked under a Superduty to see the 4R100 to be sure).

There's a big caveat that you all should know:
Assembly plants will obtain a deviation for whatever is needed to keep the production schedule. Nothing is ever hard and fast.
Just when you're absolutely positive that something will never be used -- someone obtains a temporary approval to use (even as a 'test') something that was not otherwise planned to be used.
It just makes good business sense.

Yes, I think that caveat is a good thing to consider, but our production schedule doesn't allow us to build any 4R100s for the non CA Non Lightning F150s, we're chasing assembly and engine plants pretty much all the time. While I think it's possible Ford may "make it work however it works" I think the likelyhood of substituting a 4R100 is pretty low, besides capacity issues, the EPA studies would have to be done, for every proposed drivetrain combo, not just the engine but also tire size, final drive ratios and different rear axles. It's just incredibly complicated for that kind of improvisation anymore. My opinion. But we haven't built any 4R100s intended for F150s this year, except the CAs and Lightnings, and given that what we build on a Tuesday is put in a truck assembled on Wednesday, the lead time is another factor.

Well guess what. I just purchased a 2000 f150 4X4 xcab. I have the 7700lb package. I live in virginia and I got the 4R100 trans. The code inside the door is an E. I also have orange dots. I hope the helps. Also my window sticker has F-Series Low Emission Vehicle as the vehicle description. John

Hi everybodey!
I was just about to ask if it is possible that the 7700lb F-150 gets the 4R100 and there is John and says he does. I looked under several brand new ones yesterday and they all had a 4R100! Are the maybe substitutes for the 4R70W or is this the tranny you should get with the 7700lb package?

To make matters more interesting *every* 2000 F150 7700 I looked at (5) had the U code in the door and a 4R70W in it. Every dealer said it came with the 4R100! NOT!

I have an October-built unit that I am 98% sure has a green-stickered R70 unit -- although I admit that I did not find the serial/model ID on the tranny to confirm it.
Anyone have a sure-fire ID for a 4x4 tranny (eyes not what they once were)?

If you'll look on the driver's side of the box, just forward of the extension housing, there is an ID tag with a bunch of codes on it, post as much of this info as you can, and I'll tell you about 10 interesting things about your tranny, including model, build date, etc.... From this I can definitely tell you which one you have.
I was unaware that non-CA Emissions f-150s came with 4R100's except Lightnings. And I'm positive that no 4.6's have 4R100's, as there is no 4R100 model built for the 4.6

I think John got what we are all reffering to as a "California Emmissions Package" they are not just sold in California anymore and maybe it is missleading to use that terminology. "Low Emmisions Package" is more correct now. I just have to assume Virgina is one of the stated requiring this package now. I know there are others. All F150 7700's in my area (SC) are *not* this package and have the 4R70W in them. Thats why there is so much confusion. I was not able to get a 4R100 without going up to the F250 Superduty.
