Transmission questions...

Coming up on time to change my transmission fluid..it's a 97' xcab, w/ 5.4L auto almost 60k miles.

When I change out the fluids, I'm also wanting to add in a shift kit. I've heard good things about the Transgo kit. Someone told me that B&M also makes a kit for the trucks (not sure tho, haven't researched it). Now my questions are 1) What is the tranny code for my truck? Or How do I find it? 2) What tranny fluid do you all recommend?

I can help answer part of your question.....

To determine which tranny you have, open the driver's door and look at the sticker on the B pillar....

trans code 'U' = 4r70w
trans code 'E' = 4r100.

I used Castrol semi-synthetic Mercon V trans fluid.

Sorry, I can't help with your shift kit question. I know someone on the site will.

just to make sure i'm looking at the right thing here...there were two stickers on my driver's side...one small w/ no real info, and the other had vin #'s and stuff...there's a small part at the bottom of the sticker...I've pointed out what I think is the tranny code...just want to make sure. Sorry, but I'm new to all this...

Yes, that's the tag, and it says that you have an E4OD transmission.

Here is a link to an article I wrote on how to change the ATF. It's written for a 4R100 in a Superduty, but the differences from that to your truck are very minor.

Here is some info on shift kits, I wrote it, and I don't pretend to be neutral on the subject, but for what it's worth, it's agood read.

Ok, now I'm confused again...the first guy said that if the code was a U, then it was a 4r70w, and if an E, the 4r100. And now the 3rd reply says e40d.

Sorry for my ignorance, but as stated, I'm new to this.

So, do I have a 4r100, or e40d?

And thanks for all the help/patience.

Don't worry about it, Dan97.

This is how Ford lists the transmissions:

The transmission codes are:

M - Manual, 5 speed, overdrive M5OD.
U - Automatic, 4 speed, 4R70W.
E - Automatic, 4 speed, E40D.

The 4R100 is an E40D

The 4R70W is an AODE

You also have the stronger of the 2 automatics Ford offered in '97. Very lucky.

The 4R100 replaced the E4OD, phasing in over a couple model years. The First 4R100 was in 1998, so yours is an E4OD.
