Angry Intermittent delayed shifting out of 1st

What I am experiencing is a delay in the shift from 1st to 2nd gear with my 1990 E4OD transmission, sometimes approaching 25 MPH. The weird thing is that it only occurs when the gear selector is in drive. If I manually place the selector into the 2nd position, the behavior disappears and it shifts normally.

The above phenomenon will not occur if the engine is cold, or while I am driving around for awhile. It's only after I've parked it for 10 minutes or more, but do not let it cool down completely. Once I start it back up and place it into drive, I can almost always count on it happening again. But it only does it once, and then it's fine for the duration of that jog, whether it's for 20 minutes or 2 hours.

I had my transmission serviced a week ago, as the mileage became due. At that time, the shop reported sqeaky-clean fluid with zero deposits in the bottom of the pan. Yet the problem has persisted for 3-4 weeks.

I am beginning to think that it is a computer issue. Has anyone else seen anything so bizarre?

I think you may have a shift selenoid going bad. I would have it checked out. My .02

After running their extensive diagnostics, the Ford dealer determined conclusively that my shifting problem was due to a faulty Manual Lever Position switch. They advised me that there had been a number of issues with the original design, and that its replacement included the current revision(s).

It's been two days and I have not seen the problem return.

As it turns out, the problem has returned, causing me to be a liar. Looks like it's back to the drawing board, and time to throw more money at the dealer to guess the next probable cause!

I have a '93 and this is similar to my problem. For about a 1/2 a yr now ive noticed that the transmition seems to shift to neutral between gears and then slam into the following gear. This is usually only noticed between 1st and 2nd because the opertunity for a higher RPM during shifting. I had the transmission flushed 3 months ago in hopes of fixing my problem. I did notice a slight improovement but still the problem persists. I have also noticed that if i accelerate quick, as to match the speed of the other cars, and i have to slow down prior to the 1st-2nd gear shift the truck makes a violent jolt, but if i accelerate slowly there is no jolt. Hope someone can figure this one out, without a rebuild. Perhaps it is an electronic issue. I had a neighbor take it for a drive and he suggested a problem perhaps with the pressure release of the front part of the tranny ( i may be wrong as to exactly what he said though). This does actually make me think, because before the tranny started its violent shifting the engine would make a high pitched whistle during shifting at higher RPM's. If anyone has a clue let me know.
