Question Tranny Prob or not?

Now that the weather is gettin a little colder, I'm noticing that the transmission shifts late. I mean really late, but as soon as it reaches operating temp, it's fine. The only reason I'm asking is because it never did it before, now all of a sudden i'm having a problem. Thanks for any input.

Gino, My 4R100 does the same thing. I took it to the dealer and there were no error codes.

Factory_Tech, that's the answer I was looking for. The dealer did not mention that "feature".

You have a 4R70W, and I'm not sure this applies tot hat box, but the 4R100 will not allow convetoer lockup until the fluid reaches 90oF. If you're used to converter lockup and it wasn't doing it, it might be noticable. Take it to the dealer and ask them to run the error codes to see if it's reading anything, but I think that may be it.

Thanks Guys,
I'll get it checked out at the dealer just to make sure, sounds like you might be right though!

This is more of a problem with people who have added auxiliary tranny oil coolers in the return line between the radiator and the tranny.

Dennis is right, with the adding of an oil cooler the x-mission will warm up slower and the lock up feature will take longer to come into play. Once it is cool out you can put a blocking plate over the x-mission cooler and this will aid in the x-mission warming up faster in the winter months

Sure glad to hear you guys mention this. Just this last week my 97 F150, 4.6 during fairly cold weather, (30 degrees) started to stay in 3rd gear for about 3 miles then finally it would shift to overdrive. I called the dealer and he said I needed to have the tranny serviced. $150. I just changed the fluid 3 weeks ago myself. I called the local trans shop and they said it was seals that were worn and in the cold weather they became brittle, and would have to be changed. Overhaul would cost about $1250. I'll believe you guys for now and wait for warmer weather. Anything over 40 degrees, it runs great. Thanks for the info.

I am certain that I read in the factory manuals that the 4R100 transmission has a cold weather delayed shift feature build into it. Something about getting the engine to warm up and get heat out of the heater quicker by keeping the RPM's up. No kidding! I really read that. It caught my eye because I have the 4R70W and thought that this might be a sort of neat feature to have (not that these things need the extra gas comsumption, though ---I have remote start and always let it warm up even if it wastes gas so I shouldn't talk).
Anyway, this was in the 2000 manual and I think I read it in the wiring diagram book in the section on transmission controls. I don't feel any difference in my 4R70W when starting off cold, however.
Just my 2 pennies I guess.

Hey Guys,
I had the Tranny fixed at the dealer, the problem was the 2-3 shift accumalator piston in the transmission. I'm sure this is the problem most people are having, the same problem had to be fixed in my '97 only on the 1-2 shift. mention this to your dealers, maybe they are just overlooking it. Good Luck everyone!
