5-speed shifter removal

5-speed shifter removal
I am a new owner of a 1988 F-250 with a 302 and a 5-speed transmission. I am trying to replace the shifter boot but cant remove the shifter to get the new boot on. It appears that the stick is two pieces, the upper part which is painted black, and a thinner lower part which is hidden by the boot. I don't want to remove the whole assembly from the transmission, I can see the bolt to do that, but I want to seperate the two pieces of the stick. I tried just shoving the new boot down over the shifter but it is way too thick. Any suggestions would be apprecieted.
P.S. I did a search but could not find any previous threads.
Thanks, Joel

Joel,
Remove the old boot. Underneath it should be the bolt that holds the lever to the stub coming out of the tranny.

Thank you for your tip, however removing the entire stick does not appear to be the correct way, the lower part that slides over the nub from the transmission is much to wide to slide throught the boot. The stick itself appears to be made out of two pieces, which seem to need to be seperated in order to slide to boot over the thinner lower part.

How is the boot held to the floor? Disconnect it from the floor. Mine has a plastic cover held to the floor by 4 screws.
I remove the 4 screws and the shifter **** and slid it over the top. The old boot can be seperated from the plastic floor cover and replaced with a new one. Have you tried soapy water?
