I was going to guess that but then I thought "well if its not grounded then it wouldn't work at all?" Well maybe not...

Thumbs up

cphillip--

I really like the looks of your trans. temp. gauge for my truck...nothing against yours, FORDTRK. Mind telling us brand, model no., sending unit, where purchased, etc?

No offense taken.....!! I had the Autometer Ultra Lites in our drag boat, and kinda grew fond of them.

Well now remember the parts numbers I give you are ones I put in the 4R100 tranny as far as the sender unit. It may very well be the same size hole in the 4R70W but you need to check. I seem to remember that this one was 1/4 X 20 (1/4 inch dia by 20 threads per inch? but I could be wrong) it was part number 8995 and the Gauge is an ISSPRO R9055 (black bezel). I think I paid $29.40 for the both of them included shipping. I got them from Diesel Injection Service. Yes... they sell to us gassers too and great to deal with. They probably can get you the right one if this is not it. Oh and do not order it online. Price is cheaper than online and you will be sure to get exacly what you want by calling.

FORD TRK, do you know off hand the size of the sender you used?

It wouldn't suprize me if the pressure test ports size was the same on both trannies. Anyway give DIS a call. They will know for sure what you need. Heres their web site, phone numbers are on there: http://www.dieselpage.com/index.shtml

Thanks, cphillip and FORDTRK. I'll be looking these folks up. This is a very worthwhile mod with a lot of payback potential.

While your on the phone with DIS you might want to get one of these too. Another cheap (less than $30) mod I found that is very usefull.

Has anyone gone the next step on this installation and added a temp sensor for the rear axle and/or for engine oil temp and used a 2 or 3 position switch to select the reading sensor? One guage, several readings. Should work.

I don't know about the three position thing but someone at www.ford-diesel.com said that Hyper-tech (sp? not sure of name) made an aluminum finnned rear end pumpkin cover that had a drain valve, dip stick, extra oil capacity and a port for intallation of a temperature a sender. Sounds interesting huh?

http://www.dieselpage.com/magh.htm

for a look at the trick punkin' cover. Unfortunately looks like they only have applications for the 10.5 inch rear.

My guess is you could drill and tap the differential housing for the same sensor as used in the auto tranny temp sensor and just switch between the two (or do the same for the front diff and engine oil (T off of the oil pressure sensor port?) and then put in a 4 position switch (after all, how often do you really check these items? Just seems like it would be mucho-trick if you already have the guage installed.

Gents,

Indeed, very nice installations for your transmission temperature gauges. As to the question about the Mag-Hytec covers; The company can be found at http://www.mag-hytec.com and they offer both differential and transmission covers for the F-series trucks. I am pretty sure that they offer differential covers for the smaller axle F150's. I personally have the cover for my F250LD with the 10.5 inch ring gear. It is by far the best piece of precision workmanship I have ever installed on a vehicle. I plan on making the purchase of the transmission cover soon and I know I will not be disappointed. At that time I will install both with temperature sensors and use your installation positions you have shown on this thread.

Thanks

I was looking at my dash at the location shown for the temp gauge and it looks like it might be hard to see, but I don't see any other better places either.
