Something For 4.2 Owners to have "Just In Case"....

Agreed. But I wouldn't bother building on either of these engines anyway.

well outpull depends on alot of variables too, gears being a big factor, from what i know alot of the trucks now come w/ 3:55's ive got 3:73's

4.2: 202 hp @ 4800 rpm, 252 ft/lb @ 3400 rpm
5.0: 195 hp (auto) 205 hp (stick), 275 ft/lb
I can't find the peak HP/TQ rpm's for the 5.0 anywhere. Anyway, that's pretty close. The 5.0 is a car engine, it wasn't designed for real low end grunt. The 4.2 is more of a truck engine but still based off a car engine (3.8). If you want to talk a REAL truck engine, now let's discuss the 4.9 I6.

and on the 5.0 vs 4.2 arguement, i would rather have a 4.2 actually. it might be out pulled but its probably quicker and gets better mpgs. id rather have a BIG V6 than a small V8. also the 4.9L I6 could pull the 5.0 all day so i dont wanna hear that the 5.0 is awesome. the 4.9L trucks was actually bought more than the 5.0L because they were more powerful starting out with loads and could handle the loads better.

i would race you with my 08 4.2 with a cold air intake but i live about 1000miles from you. and on the exhaust arguement, i have found only 3 exhaust systems/mufflers that sound good on a 4.2. 2 whole systems made by gibson racing and one flowmaster(no idea which one it was) sounded good thru the whole rpm range. most sound good at idle but sound like crap at higher rpms and some are the opposite. very few so far sound nice all the time. the stock system is actually the 4th best sound ive heard for the 4.2L. i am trying to make mine look like duals but it is gonna be split after the rear axle then come out of the back as fake duals. its a lot cheaper and i dont have the money for a system anyway.

well yeah it obviously gets better gas mileage than the old 5.0 and i have driven an ext cab 4.2 and was not impressed by its "quickness", but the 4.9 is a different engine, im not the one who brought that up, i know the 4.9 is an incredible engine

i was curious about this for awhile... the 4.2 is a stroked 3.8L. so with that in mind, can the 4.2 use aftermarket parts made for a 3.8L as long as they are on the exterior of the engine? (example: headers, throttle bodies) i was thinking internal ones would probably not match up but isn't the block the same as the 3.8L? or am i wrong? just asking, i never really cared to look at a 3.8L mustang up close. in my opinion all mustangs are poor excuses for a muscle car after the early 70s. i hate mustangs but will admit when i see a cool one.

Let me get my XCal3 and a set of UDPs and I'll go
you will lose. I'm running a CAI, Efans, and a P&P and my buddy with a stock .4.6L OBS like mine takes me from a stop. but like I said, when I get a tuner and a set of UD pulleys, I think I will be able to take him. Plus our OBS are a couple hundred pounds lighter than the NBS.
and yes. the only way to get long-tube headers is to get them from a 3.8L Mustang, but a little fab work is needed to get them to clear the starter.

10 free'd up HP and a few ft/lbs of torque plus a MPG or two sounds about good right now.

They slow down the compressor, power steering, and alternator. My compressor isnt working right now. I dont turn my wheels sitting at a redlight, so I'm fine there. Even so, I can tap the throttle to get full control back. And my alternator was rebuilt last year, and a I got a new battery last week. I dont have any extra electronics, so I think I'm good. Plus my OBS doesnt have a harmonic balancer.
