This is not normal imho. I had 2011 f150 ecoboost and never had the fan run high.
Just bought 2014 f150 ecoboost and had the fan run high when starting a cold engine.
im bringing in to dealer to check it out. No way this is normal

Actually it is normal, from model year 2012 and up the PCM programming was changed to cycle the fans more often to improve A/C performance. My truck was marginal on it's A/C refrigerant charge. Once I topped it off the fans started running more. I'll take a little bit of fan noise in exchange for better A/C any day of the week.

Welcome to the site, ecobooster1014. Going to the dealership is a great next step; they'll be in the best position to determine if your fan is operating within spec. How many miles are on your truck currently?

I didn't have a problem with the 2011 or the 2014 a/c, although it is not quite summer yet down here in New Orleans. I could see the fan revving up if I was idleing awhile or towing something, but starting a cold engine on a 80 degree day, makes me scratch my head.

Thanks for replying, ecobooster1014. When are you heading in to the dealership? Be sure to come back and let us know what you hear; if you'd like me to escalate this to your regional customer service manager, just send me a PM with your details. I'll need your full name, best daytime phone number, VIN, current mileage, and servicing dealership.

I am located in Texas and it has been pretty hot lately. When I started the F150, the engine fans almost immediately went into overdrive. I am not sure if they were blowing at their highest setting, but they sure were loud. I figured it would calm down once on the road, but they kept going what sounded like full-speed. (I could hear it from within the cab).

After a 40 minute drive, I decided to pull over and check under the hood. I turned off my truck, looked under the hood, saw nothing unusual and started it back up. Once again the fan(s) spun up to full speed, but once on the road for several minutes, they finally calmed down and occasionally (when traffic slowed down) would spin back up.

To give you an idea, it was probably around 98 degrees here today, but I have never experienced this with my Explorer. Especially not the 45 minute period earlier today during which they were going full blast.

Is this normal? Or are these break-in pains?

Thanks all!
I have 2014 eco f150 and my fan would go on overdrive on a cold engine. Never had this happen on my 2011 f150. I put in shop and am waiting verdict.

Any news from the dealer today, ecobooster1014? My offer to assist still stands; PM me with the info I listed above, and I'll loop in your regional customer service manager.

Brought the truck in Tuesday and they still haven't looked at if yet. They said probably today. If this normal then to me it is totally unacceptable. Noise is way too loud for me. Also when the ac is on and is cooling the unit seems to cycle. Say you just get in the hot truck and turn the ac on. The air will get to say 50 degrees and suddenly go up 3-5 degrees for twenty or so seconds then start to get colder again and keeps repeating this cycle. The air will get down to mid to upper 40's but keep cycling. When the fan got stuck on overdrive the other day the unit seemed to cycle more and this is when I decided to bring in to Ford. I did read one thread and they thought the unit was overcharged and when they reduced the pressure the fan did not come on as much. If they tell me this normal I will trade in for another brand truck.
Thanks

Hi Bill,

I just sent you a private message (PM) with your case information. I recommend editing the public post to remove your personal details.

Loud Fans

Took to dealer to have ac checked and spoke about the fans. They said all is normal and they refused to check for correct freon levels by removal and checking what was removed.
I have the same issue. If it had been this loud since 2013, I could agree with the whole ambient temp. switch doing it's job but it just started a month ago. It has never been this loud before.

yes this thing is very loud. I call it the Tazmanian Devil fan. Sometimes it comes on and sometimes it doesn't. Sometimes it's real hot and sometimes times it's not. I hate it. Sounds like the fan is going to blow up. Have never heard any vehicle sound this loud anytime before. Ford tech. says this is normal. Ok if you say so.
