Question 5w30 VS 10w30 oil

Who uses 10w30 oil over 5w30 and why? I live in Tamp, Florida and use Chevron Supreme 10w30 dino oil.I hear mixed replies about this subject;like its better to stay with the manual says,5w30.I'm thinking of switching to Mobil1 10w30.Lets hear more replies on this subject.

mileage?

How many miles do you have on the truck? I use 5w30 here in KY. 0W30 in the Winter. Always Mobil1. You could probably get away with 10W30 in Tampa, but I'd use synthetic for it's quicker flow during initial startup.

If you do a search on "10W30" or "5W30" you'll find all th info you could ever want.

That's what I use too along with a motorcraft oil filter.

Since we hardly ever see freezing weather here I don't see the need for 5W oil, heh

During cooler weather you truck will use more gas with the 10w30 because it will take longer for the oil to get to the proper viscosity.

With a 5w30, the oil starts out thinner therefore will possibly save some wear and mpgs. Otherwise if you only do long trips the 10w30 will hardly make a difference.

By cooler weather, I'm talking in the 50's and 60's. You would be suprise how much thicker a 10w30 will be at those temps.

I would say stick with 5w30 unless you see high oil consumption, then I would say give the 10w a try to reduce the consumption.

i ususlly change my oil twice a year- winter months gets 5w30 full synthetic Mobil 1. SUmmer months it will get 10w30 full synthetic.
temps range from 0 degrees in winter to 95 in the summer so i have a wide range of temps to deal with.

should i stay with 5w30 full syn. in the hott summer months if i do mostly in town driving?? is a thinner weight oil worse for highway driving??

I use 5w-30. I live in the northeast where we have recently had temperatures of -20 in the morning when I leave for work. Obviously the 5w-30 gives me better protection during startup & warm up. I use Castrol GTX with a FL820s filter, but will soon be switching to AMSOIL for even better protection at cold startups.

Personally, I just use the Motorcraft brand oil (5W/30) and filter down here in Georgia/Alabama.

The viscosity between a 5w and a 10w is very little overall. Yes, you would have better oil flow at startup with 5w over 10w, but it's not near as significant as you mention. Look at the Kinematic (cst) viscosity of each oil and the difference is very small. As for MPG, again it would hardly be noticed over a years time. I've used both and I have 90,000 trouble free miles. On a sidenote, Chevron supreme is an excellent oil, as Chevron has been a leader in the developement of base oils for several years.
