remote oil filter
Hey, I have a '97 with the 4.6; and I'm tired of reaching over the tire to remove the oil filter and then spilling used oil all over. Does anyone know of a remote oil filter kit? Also do later models come with a remote filter so I can look at one and see how it's installed.
Thanks

There have been 'numerous' threads open on this topic. Here are three suggestions if you're really interested in doing a remote system for your truck.
1) Run a search of the Message Board for "Remote Oil Filter" and you should come up with enough posts to keep you busy for quite a while.
2) Do a photo gallery search for 'Galaxy'. He did a custom remote setup that is one of the sweetest installs I've seen. He's got numerous pics in his gallery of it. You can also email him from there with an questions you might have.
3) Three vendor links who offer a system for your truck are: www.summitracing.com , www.amsoil.com , and www.permacool.com .
Good luck.

BigDeal, thanks for the compliments. My goal has been to be known for something on here. Glad it ended up being something good
Anyways, here's the link to the post I did on my install and like he said, there's tons of pictures in my gallery...

Galaxy..... I decided here recently that I'd take motivation from what you'd done, and build a relocation kit for myself. Went the whole way too (stainless hose, Earls fittings, TD Performance plates). Even had to fab a mounting plate for the filter base. When I was done with it, it looked terrific (excuse me for the self-compliment here). Then I fired up my truck to let it warm up, and wouldn't ya know it, the thing leaked like nobodies business at the mechanical connections between the Earls fittings. Come to find out from the local speed parts guy that the 'swivel fit' fittings I have are defective (the taper on them is not to AN spec). Said he's seen several cases of this and was glad I did a full inspection of the system before I drove off down the road. He couldn't replace them for me because he didn't stock the swivel fit fittings. Long story short here, my truck currently wears a regular filter and my 'kit' is on my workbench while I am continuing my argument with Earls Tech Support group who refuse to acknowledge any issues with the fittings, and as such are unwilling to replace them. Here's what I had in place before I had to remove it:
I take it you didn't suffer any leakage or fitting problems? I'm really annoyed since I got big $$$ invested in it (I know you can relate) and it's totally unusable right now. Have basically decided to wait until my next oil change to try to install this again. Hopefully by then Earl's will have come through for me.

smpoyser-
Just out of curiosity, a way you can avoid getting all that oil all over the place is to remove the filter from underneath the truck. Just curb the wheels all the way to the right, then you'll have clear access to the filter. Just put the pan underneath. Make sure you have the PARKING BREAK ON, though. I did this last night and didn't spill a drop. I have to admit, I'm thinking about a remote filter, too.
Good luck

BigDeal, that looks totally sweet I like your filter location too. Luckily you have a two wheel drive. I was going for a location like yours but would still had to take my skid plate off every time and that was one of the things I was trying to avoid. I love it though. Sorry about the problems. Mine worked like a champ from day one. I went with the regular Earl's fittings though. Definately the second best set-up I have seen (JK)

Where did y'all get those "Earl" fittings and stainless hoses? Are they expensive and worth using over the neoprene hoses that come with the kits like the Perma Cool? The Perma Cool is cheap- $45 in JC Whitney. Also, if the rubber hoses were to be used, would it be a good idea to put heat sleeves on them and should the filter be mounted parallel to the original location or put anywhere? And can the motorcraft filter for the 4.2 work on it? Sorry for all the questions but I'm really curious about these systems y'all have and might put one in mine. Thanks.

What's y'all's opinion of this kit I found on truckperformance? It's made by Milodon and is $ 82.95? It seems to be a step up from the Perma Cool kit. Just curious because I can't afford those special racing fittings.

Oh yeh, over time, wouldn't stuff build up in any of the hoses? Wouldn't they need to be cleaned or replaced every so often?

MyFordTruck98, Just so you're clear on something (sorry if I misunderstood) the braided hose that BigDeal and I have is NOT a braided covering for any rubber hose. It is real stainless braiding that is manufactured/embedded into the hose itself. Very good, strong stuff. And expensive. -10 runs around $8 a foot.
Your filter is going to be dependant upon what the manufacturer of the remote kit says with almost 99.5% of them requiring a FL-1A (or Fram PH8A--- [can't believe I just said the "F" word]) style filter. My recommendation, and probably everyone elses, would be to mount the filter verticle so you don't have to worry about oil draining out of it when the truck is off. Most good filters have a check valve to prevent this but why push it.

Thanks guys.
Oh, Galaxy, I didn't mean to sound stupid earlier, what I meant by "over" is : Are the ss lines worth using "in preference to" the rubber hoses. I'm sure the rubber ones are ok, they are used on every kit I've seen, and like was said before, I can always upgrade later.
By the way, (Galaxy and BigDeal) great job on those setups! They look cool as hell!
