Oil Filter Placement

This is my 2nd Super Crew (I now have a 2003, and originally had a 2001) and decided I'd change the oil myself on this one. Anyone out there have any tips on how to change the oil filter without getting oil all over the place? I can't understand why car/truck manufacturers can put them in a more accessible place. Today I tried using an extra large ziplock placed back over the filter while I unscrewed it but still spilt some oil. Anyone have any good suggestions?

Hey!

If it's anything like my 01, there is a drip pan below the filter. When changine the filter, turn the wheels to the right and unscrew. I don't think there is any way around getting oil on the frame. You may want to consider getting a relocation set if it really bothers you.

good luck

i sccond the relocation kit, not only will it make easier filter swapps, but cools the oil a little more. also if u dont want to go this way, take a screwdriver and pop a hole in the filter before removing it, less area for the oil to wonder around and might be easier to catch, works great on boats where the filters are inverted..

I have this same problem on my inboard Wakeboard boat enigine the filter is way down low and when removeing it oil spilled all over the bilge area. So what i did to solve my problem and it may work for you as well is go to any place that sells Weber BBQ supplies (Yeah I know it sounds wierd but it works) They sell little aluminum trays that go in the bottom of the BBQ to catch all the grease and drippings, put it under the filter you could even make up some type of little hooks so you could hang it right under the filiter and whala oil drains right into tray then you drain tray into what ever oil container you have used to drain the engine oil.

In reference to the hints about makeing a hole in the filter with a screwdriver - MAKE sure that the filter is at least a little loose before you do that.

If it is stuck / you don't have the correct filter wrench, etc - you can finish this sad tale yourself :o

Do those relocations kits really work well? And, where can you get em?

Thanks,

Jim

i had one on my mustang, worked great, you get a adapter that will thread onto the existing place where the filter goes on the motor, and a plate that u can mount pretty much anywhere on that the filter will now mount, and hose to connect the two..

I JUST YESTERDAY installed a remote oil filter kit that I got from Summit racing. It took about four hours what with the close clearances, drilling the frame for the remote mount, and running the hoses but I think it's worth it. My oil capacity is now seven quarts and I hope the long hoses and remote filter will act as a mini oil cooler. I mounted the remote on the passenger sside frame rail on the inside just forward of the radiator and the filter is well protected as it is slightly above the tow ring. If you need more info i will be glad to post another reply.
PS---no more oil all over the place!!!!
