odd hesitation/shutter
Took a long ride up to N.H. this weekend and noticed an odd hesitation / shutter. I noticed this at highway speeds approaching an incline/hill. Just before the truck would down shift, it would bog down/hesitate a bit and shutter a lot probably around 2000-2300 RPM. After down shifting the engine would run fine. Gas mileage for the trip was fine and power seems normal. The plugs and wires have about 20K on them and no check engine lights. Tranny fluid level is OK. The truck is a ’97 F150 XLT 4X4 4.6L engine with 88K miles. Any thoughts?

Don't know if this will help you with your '97, but I had a similar symptom with my '01.
Mine had a slight buck/hesitation, mainly at freeway speed when doing a slight acceleration (like up an incline). I never get a CEL but took it in since it was in warranty. It turned out to be a bad (but not bad enough to create a code) ignition coil for one of the cylinders.

You've got it...
You've described my initial symptoms of tranny shudder exaclty!
What you have is tranny shudder. Check the website to see just what causes it:

This is what I did to fix it. Local transmission shop did a complete flush and fluid replacement. They thought that might do the job. If it didn't take care of the shudder, they started to list a few expensive repairs that 'might' take care of it. This fix worked for about 3 months...then the shudder returned...So did my frustration.
Then I heard about LubeGuard and Lucas that might help with the shudder. It was alot cheaper than the other fixes offered by the trans shop. One bottle of LubeGuard took care of the shudder and I haven't had it since.
Give this a try *first*...it's inexpensive and may save yourself alot of frustration attempting to look for other problems.
If it walks like a duck and talks like a duck...it must be tranny shudder. Kill it with "LubeGuard."
