4.6 or 5.4
#2
4.6L u get better gas milage and when u mod em u get more out of em then if u mod the 5.4. the 4.6 and 5.4 are almost same exact engine only the 5.4 has a longer stroke. so they arent as safe at high RPM as the 4.6L is. which is why "Neal-the man who knows everything" blew his engine like it says on his website.....

I have a 4.6 in my 98. I have a friend who has the 5.4 in his 97. We both have exhaust, I have an intake and chip. I can beat him on the street but his has a little more torque in the mud. BUT I still get better mileage doing normal driving. Make no mistake I LOVE my 4.6L

Now i have a 99 f-150 supercab 4x4 with the 4.6 and i cant complain i guess for just a reliable good truck. Now my dad has a 00 same everything but with the 5.4. If i was to buy another truck i would definelty get the 5.4. I think the 5.4 gets better gas mileage because it doesnt have to shift down as much on the hills. Certainly the 5.4 will smoke the 4.6 from the stop light. Ive raced ours and big differnce..that 5.4 has amazing low end torque. As far as pulling our 16ft cargo trailer for construction...if there is a big wind the 4.6 is knocked on its *** and it has to be floored to stay at 55 on the hills. The 5.4 pulls much easier. In my opinion i would spend the extra money and have the 5.4 bragging right because with out a doubt factory wise they will smoke the 4.6 under.

the rear end make a difference also..... in case u didnt know. but the 4.6 builds RPM's quicker cause less weight to throw from piston weight difference and it also hass less distance to travel through the engine block, so yeh 5.4 has more stock HP and stock torque but what u expect. but the 4.6 and 5.4 shift at same RPM. i've been mowin lawns professionally for 5 years so this truck has about 40K miles towin a tralor with about 2100lbs of weight on it and the trailor itself weighs about 1100lbs. and i never had any problems with it and i got 17,18mph highway and 12 in the city. also how exactly does a bigger engine get better gas milage? especially when it says on the window stick the fuel milage is less....

I think what he means is that when the engine works harder, it gets worse mpg.
The difference between the 4.6 and 5.4 is only a couple miles per gallon from what I have seen. To me its well worth the power gain. The torque is really the difference though. It has lots of low end power and through out the power band. Especially with the superchips tuner and an airforce one intake.
The best thing is to drive em both and decide for yourself. Thats what I did.

Look on this board... Most of the 4.2L guys get worse mileage than the 4.6L guys.
I personally owned a 98 Scab with a 4.2L, and a '01 'Screw with the 5.4L.
The 'Screw was a much larger and heavier truck, but got the same around town mileage, and about 1.5 MPG better on the highway.
The 4.6L is a great engine, no doubt. But with comparable mods, the 5.4 will make more power, easier, every time.

If you aren't towing, I think you would be plenty happy with a 4.6.
1) I wouldnt say the 4.6 or 5.4 is more responsive to mods than the other.
2) From what I have seen, the 5.4s get about an average of 14-15 MPG, but Ive seen some people as high as 22 (that I can recall). I personally get about 14.5-15 with 98% highway driving on my 97 4x4 with 5.4l although Im probably not the lightest foot around either.
Overall: If you arent towing, dont let the engine size be a main factor. Find a style that you like first, and then consider the engine (I would disclude the 4.2 though, its a dog IMO...my friend has one with the same year/style truck as mine except its a 4x2 and only xlt).

yeh true more power at same RPM. but more fuel is burned at same RPM so 2000RPM which is about 65 in the 5.4L engine and 65 in the 4.6L engine the 4.6 has better fuel economy. but with my mods 2000RPM is about 70 and i have a 3.55 rear end. and i get 23mpg @ 70mph and 20mpg @ 80mph on highway.

I have a 4.6l and it's a really good motor. Mine was taking a 100 shot of nitrous fine until the fuel pump gave out and I heard the detonation.
I've been driving for about the past 4 months w/ a piece of metal bouncing around in the #8 cylinder and it still goes strong. The 4.6l will last when u need them to. LOL..
The 4.6l can go as far as you want it to. I use to want a 5.4l and thought about swaping engines out but now I'm going to stick with the 4.6l motor. It can go as far as you want it to.

My 5.4L does 70 at 2000RPMs on the dot with my 265/75/16 tires. I have the 3.55 rear end (unless the prev owner changed them and assuming my speedo is actually correct).

But in your case I think you may have been saying no point in swapping if the current one works?
