What engine can I put in a 97 F150?

"In general", I think you can only swap in the same year or newer engine into any vehicle.....
So, you could not take a 1990 HO 5.0 out a Mustang and drop it in your 1997 truck and still register it. I think what determines the engine year is the year the block was cast??
While the pushrod engines that were still available in 1997 did not go into the F150's, they still had the 351 and 460 that they put in the F250's of that year. I'm not sure about a 302 of that year however.... They did have the 4.6 in 1997.
With enough time, parts and money, you can swap anything into anything.....
I know in Washington state, on 1997 and newer vehicles, they don't do a sniff test on the cars anymore. They just plug into the ODBII com port and read for any computer codes.
So, I guess as long as your ODBII still functioned, they would not know what year engine was in there...... Not sure how you would wire it up, but there you go.....
I'd look for another 5.4 to put in it or rebuild the one you've got.
Good luck!

you could use the 5.0 out of the same year explorer. the problem is that the bellhousing for a 5.0 is different then the one for the 5.4 so you would have to swap trannys also.
so it comes down to how much you want to spend to put a smaller engine in it.
i would be tryin to find a way to get the 6.8 v-10 in it if it was my truck. just my 2 cents.

A swap with a modular motor (4.6 or 5.4)would be much easier than trying to use one of the older push rod engines. As far as swapping in a 5.4, I do not think the tranny would have to be changed, but it depends on what tranny you have. There are lots of 5.4's running around with a 4r70w tranny.
