Anyone have the instructions for 1998 F-150?

I bought a Chiltons and the timing instructions were nothing looking like my heads and cam sprockets.

I had no copper chain link like they said.. and my marks were different.

I've attached a rough sketch of what mine looks like.. Does anyone have instructions for one that looks kinda like this? The numbering on it I just made up, and the marks might not be relatively correct, but they are the ones that are on there. (My cam sprocket teeth also aren't as messed up Notice the keyway and timing mark on the harmonic balancer.

It's a 1998 F-150 4.6L Windsor with 5.4L head

Thanks!

Did anyone see this? I can't find timing instructions for it

Again.. My truck is strange, it's a 1998 4.6L but comes with the head that says 5.4L on it.

Thanks

Are the cam sprockets pressed on or are they bolted on? Do you have access to a fax? I can fax you the instructions.

Sure do.

If Jean doesn't get ya, shoot me a fax number and I'll get 'em out to you. Or hell, even if he does, I'll send another copy too.

Your fax is going out as I am typing this post. Let me know if it doesn't come through.

instructinos not clear

My timing sprocket doesnt have the same marks or the copper links on the chain.

Does the fact that my head says 5.4L mean anything? Is it possible that I need the instructions for the 5.4L even though mine is a 4.6?

You will have to mark your chain as shown in the diagram. Can you get a picture of the sprocket?

Sorry y'all...

I've been busier than a one legged man in a rear kicking contest this past week, haven't had a chance to get to the fax machine at work. Don't shoot me!

But in the meantime, like JMC said, we need to see what your cam sprockets look like.

Quinten,

I faxed anxvariety over the instructions from the Helm manual.

What I can't get my head around is the fact that the skecth that anx showed us has two solid cam sprockets and the fact that they are pressed on.
The WEP cams have pressed on sprockets and use a solid one on the driver side and a holed one on the passenger side. The REP cams have bolted on sprockets and are both solid. It doesn't make sense.

anx,

Need picture of cam sprocket to identify proper mark for timing.

JMC,

Thanks for clarification. I left out the holes on the picture I drew.. My cam sprockets have holes like the ones in the instructions you sent, however the notches are different.

I'm working on getting pictures and will post as soon as I do.

Thanks again,
anx

Here is a picture of a 5.4 engine but the 4.6 will be similar. Notice on the passenger side cam sprocket that the two holes divide the sprocket in two. There are 4big circles on each half of the sprocket. Exactly in the middle of the upper half in this picture you will notice the dot and the copper link is aligned with the dot. Thanks to Neal the Hp Freak for providing the pic.

I wish I had a 5.4L

Here's the pictures of my cam sprockets.. They didn't come out too clean(my photo skills are weak).

I highlighted in yellow the areas where my marks are since it's kinda hard to see in the picture.. Let me know if you need better pic and I will take again in daylight.

The red isn't blood.. it's just paint.. I was trying to mark it one night in a panicked desparation

Thanks again for you guidance.

Those are the marks. Make sure you don't turn the crankshaft with the head on and the chain timing not set correctly. You will push the pistons up into the valves.

JMC,

I don't quite understand the marking the chain part.. Why do I need to mark it? I can see where that'd be useful if I were taking off a head and I wanted to remember the spot to put it.

THanks
anx
