Help choosing a mechanic

Ok, i gave in and took the truck to the ford dealer yesterday, and they were going to diagnose it for me...... well, when they told me it would be $180 for a "diagnostic check", i didnt have the heart (or the wallet)to pay that much just to chance them telling me that they cnd (could not duplicate)..

ok now what, do most mechs have access to the same type of machines/computers that the dealer does?? i would much rather pay 50-75 $ to find out that the computer says there is nothing wrong..

by the way, whatever happened to good old fashioned troubleshooting, not just saying that the computer didnt find anything wrong and sending you on your way??

P.S. anyone want a 2001 supercrew?? cause i dont

I'll take it off your hands for free!

All joking aside, if there is a check engine light, there will be an error code stored in the computer. Autozone will read codes for free and also give bad advice for free. But get the code read and do some investigating from there, including posting the problem on this board with the trouble code. We can help!

Let's hope it's a simple problem. What are the symptoms?

If you've checked the coils and they are fine, I wouldn't replace them. No CEL makes it a little tough to diagnose. Have you changed the plugs? Believe it or not a bad plug will give you all kinds of trouble - and without a code.

Also, have you serviced the transmission? Even if the fluid is clean, it could be a culprit behind torque converter shudder. I'd drain and fill it with a filter change just to eliminate the possiblity.

Check the wire connections on the coils. For some reason my 2001 has been a corrosion nightmare with its electrical system.

I don't like the sound of what came out of your fuel filter.

i didnt like the LOOKS of what came out of the filter, but it did come out of the tank side and not the engine side, so i wasnt too worried. just dont think you are getting "clean" gas from the gas station...

i have changed all the plugs with motorcraft, checked the coils resistance, changed the ff, checked the pcv valve with no luck.

could this be related to a crankshaft position sensor? im not sure how that system works, but im gonna get in the manual and check it out.

how about clogged or dirty fuel injs.? i noticed that a few of them had a little build up on them, not on the "jets", but a generally dirty look

this is driving me nuts, i like the truck, but i will not put up with this for long.......

thanks for the help
