a toughy?
Hi all-
Like the name says, I'm not necessarily the best with cars in general, but maybe I can get enough info out there that someone may have an idea or two to help.
I have a 96 F150 with the inline 6 engine. In Ohio the E-check tests are solely done by hooking up a computer to the data link port on the passenger side of the truck. The problem is, the data is not coming through... the tech said the computer is fine, but the codes need to be cleared and reset. However, all of the efforts to do this and get the computer to read the codes have failed. We've tried the suggestions in the manual, which include disconnecting the negative ground for 20 seconds, and driving the truck a certain way for a period of time. Supposedly, it should reset itself. Basically, if we can't get the data read by the computer at the e-check place, we can't register the vehicle... they won't do it the old fashioned way.
If I've made any sense, and you have a suggestion, I'd appreciate the help. If this was all jibberish garbage, well, sorry... I guess I'll just get out the sledge hammer and try to fix it that way...

try disconnecting the battery neg cable a little longer ( some even turn in the headlights to but more of a drain while the battery is disconnected.) what does the "tech." at the shop say about this. If this person does a lot of these tests he ( or she) must certianly see this problem once in a while. If you have codes then post them here, they might be helpful

if i understand this right you have no communication with the pcm. sounds like a wiring problem to the data link connector. circuits 914 and 915 this is the network it uses to communicate with the scanner. if this is the case you would need wiring diagrams and a digital volts ohm meter to diagnose.
