Timing Problem?

I have a 1986 F-150 302 EFI with 150,000 miles. Engine was "missing" (shaking) yesterday for brief period - had just gassed up and thought there possibly trash in the gas so I accelerated, slowed down and the problem went away. Today, driving home from work on the expressway, the "missing" started again and got progressively worse until the truck stopped. The catalytic converter was red-hot so I had to leave the truck on the side of the road and walk home. Phoned a mechanic who advised the catalytic converter overheating indicates it is a "timing problem". I went back, got the truck started, and managed to limp home. Is there anything I can do to correct the problem before having the truck towed to a mechanic?
Thank you.

Following my post, I checked the distributor cap and rotor - both showed wear and corossion. Replaced the cap / rotor and the truck seems to run fine.
Comments still welcome.
Thanks.
