Cold start noise Timing

Cold start noise Timing
I own a 2000 F150 2wd with 63,000
I'm hearing a strange noise during coldstart for the last week. Reminds me of a lifter tapping and only lasts about 5 seconds.
I dropped it off yesterday and the mechanic called and said they want $900 dollars for exploratory surgery. They believe it's either a Timing chain tensioner or guide problem. Of coarse it's no longer under warranty so I pay the bill. He mentioned you could live with it. What would you do? I have a wav file if anybody wants to hear it.

i wouldnt spend 900 dollars just to make a clicking noise go away that only lasts for 5 seconds. you will think i am full of crap, but use a motorcraft oil filter. only they have special rubber plungers inside of them that retain oil after the engine is shut off. that sound you are hearing is because theres no oil, and theres no oil because you didnt use a motorcraft oil filter. hope this helps

It sure does sound like the classic Fram/Cheapie oil filter noise.
My 5.4 is very loud at start up in the winter and virtually silent at start up in the summer. It could be that you just aren't used to it.
Or if it is going away after 5 seconds it could be something that has to build pressure first. Make sure everything is in the off position when you start it next time.
How do you know it isn't piston slap?

It could be a noisy fuel injector or injectors.
I know you have a 5.4, but many of us with the 4.2 liter V6 have put up with a clicking sound from the injectors since our trucks were new. Sounds like lifter noise, and its most noticeable on cold start up. If it is a noisy injector, there doesn't seem to be any harm in ignoring it.
