Aftermarket tach install - please help!! ECM?

Have a question for anyone who has installed an aftermarket tach, or remote start unit ect..

I am suppose to tap into the white/pink stripe wire down in the ECM harness. I found what I believe to be this wire, and spliced into it, and ran a tach check and the tach has power, but no RPM reading. (i know it has power because it springs up to (0) when 12V is supplied. But, no RPM reading when engine is started).

Anyone with experience with this White/pink wire please help, send a picture or and advise you can give me is greatly appreciated.

OH, Also, I cannot find a power source that is ONLY hot when the key is ON!!! (such as the cigarette lighter, nope.. thats 12V all the time) Any help here? I just got this truck.. its a base model with the good stuff. 97' V8 4X4 extended cab.

Your radio has a 12V source as well as the window wiper circuit. Check with a haynes type manual with a wiring diagram to verfify the wire color.

I used that same Link when I installed a Bulldog Remote Starter on my 97. And I had all kinds of strange electircal problems. My truck whould start when the dome light turned on and many other things.

After 2 weeks dealing with thier Custumer Support I yanked it out and everything worked fine.

lllateralus,

Is the tach wired properly? + to switched to battery, - to good ground and input signal to tach wire at PCM? What tach did you buy? Is it compatible?

Hey guys, thanks for the replys.

Indeed the tach did have a good 12V, a good ground and 80% sure my splice into the white/pink was successful, although I cannot be 100%. I suppose this could be the problem.
(im also not 100% sure it IS the correct wire... it looked like more of an off white wire with pink stripe to me..)

I found this info on another site. Im going to give it a shot. It is in regards to a 97' F150 4.6 litre.

"The tach wire is a white wire with red parallelograms (spaced an inch or so apart down the wire). It is located in the wiring cluster above the drivers side kick panel. This wiring cluster goes through the firewall. The ground, powered key, and powered lights are hooked up in the fuse box in the same location as this wiring cluster under the dash. You do not even have to raise the hood to install the tach."
