random check engine

today, on my way home from work, 40 miles from my house.. i went to leave, and when i started my truck, and turned on the a/c almost immediately, the check engine light came on. Now the truck is not running rough, but just to see what it could be, i went to autozone, and got that little scanner, but when i went to plug it up, the obd2 connector couldnt get anything, and the guy there said it was my port, and not his machine... now if my truck isnt running rough, is it something i should worry about?

You really need to identyfy your vehicle by year, engine, transmission, etc. There are differences and we are not psychic.

For a 2000 F150, check fuse F3 in the under dash fusebox. It supplies power to pin 16 of the OBD-II test port (and nothing else).

For a 97, it's F12 in the same fusebox that does this job.

Until you are able to get the OBD-II codes, there is no way of determining why the CEL came on or how serious (or not) it might be.
