Something that is often overlooked is a engines torque output. Horsepower is only part of the equasion. It takes torque to get you rolling. Torque is why a diesel can out pull most gas engines. On the street, light to light, a engine with 250 hp and 400 lbs of low end torque will move a 5000 vehicle easier then a 250 hp engine with 300 lbs of low end torque. A lot of mods out their claim to boost horsepower but actually kill low end torque. The 5.4 has advantages in both torque and horsepower. A engine is nothing but a giant air pump the more air and fuel you can fit into it (displacement), the more power your going to get out of it(we are talking naturally aspirated that is.) I am sorry but in the case of engines bigger is better.

You will not convince the youngster he's wrong

Identical trucks with the exception of engine size and he swears the "faster" reving engine will beat the 60 hp advantage. I've been driving longer than he's been alive and worked on more gas/diesel engines than he has probably seen and driven both engines in their past and present configurations and I can state without hesitation....YOUR WRONG FAST150.

The 4.6 is a fine engine as is the 5.4 but NOTHING can substitute for HP/torque and the 5.4 wins in both catagories.

Go tell the guy with the 427 he's gona get his butt kicked by a "faster" reving 351W

Or if it's on an engine stand.
but that doesn't really count, lol

Please don't speak of intelligence and continue mispelling words coupled with atrocious grammar.

How about this...

Does anyone have timeslips for stock 4.6l and stock 5.4l trucks in similar configs?

I can see where the 4.6l engine can be considered "sportier" because it does like to get into the rpms, which is why the race mustang people like them. But as far as moving a heavy truck, torque is where it's at.

If your friends are into racing the 1320 or running people from light to light, then I can see how they would want the 5.4l engine. But not for a road course mustang.

okay this will prove the 5.4 is a better truck engine than a 4.6 and will even prove the 5.4 needs improvement.....all f-250 come standard with a 4.6 no, 5.4...I'm not down on the 4.6 it's a an excellant engine that'' has been around longer than the 5.4 ( cougaur T-Bird ) rev's quick, good H/P for it's displacement, That's why it's in the mustang, crown Vic, you don't need as much torque to move a lighter car, bigger truck empy/Full biger is better...the 4.6 and 5.4 use the same amount in flue.

The 5.4l may be able to tow more but why spend the extra money on a 5.4l if he doesn't have to and also get slightly more gas mileage out of the 4.6l engine. I know it's not a big difference between the engines but it's still a difference. I could cruise at 21mpg on the interstate w/ 3.73 gears in my old truck. With 3.08s it was close to 22mpg. If he's not going to be upset w/ a dodge ram trying to race him at the light and losing, then the 4.6l is fine.

The 4.6l Engine is more that adequate to move the truck around and people can say, "it sounds like it's working harder" to move the truck but it's getting better/same gas mileage, then is it working that much harder?
