Recent Mileage suprise
I have an '01 F150 extended cab with a 5.4L Auto and 3.31 rear end with 88k on the stock engine. We recently took a camping trip and with 4 people and a dog in the cab as well as the entire back end of the truck loaded down I got 18.5 MPG with this beast. I was really shocked. I even double checked the mileage with a GPS. I drove 260 miles and it took 14 gal./ of gas. Does this seem pretty good?

No it was one way. Coming back I was hauling a trailer with 5 ATV's on it so the mileage sucked. This was through some hilly country in Southern Mo though. I was basically going North to South. I just put a camper shell on it so possibly that helped with wind resistance. I don't check my mileage often but I believe around town I get about 13 or so. I was really impressed.

I went through my first two tanks with my '02 F150 with the 5.4L, 2wd, 3.55s and 30k on it.
First tank, driving it like gas is expensive (which it still is), went 396 miles on 20.2 gallons -- 19.6mpg average.
Second tank, driving it harder (WOT getting on the freeway half the time, 2500rpm shifts, etc) resulted in 17.6mpg (393 miles on 22.3 gallons).
This is with a 60/40 freeway/city mix (80% of the city is rush hour traffic), max freeway speed is about 75, average city speed is about 35mph and OD is off for any stop and go driving.

Yeah I forgot to mention my '01 5.4 is a 4x4 also. Traffic heqavy initially but lightened up and the driving was all highway at around 70mph (give or take here and there) I'm just blown away. I really didn't believe it at first but like I said, I double checked it with the GPS I had with me and it is accurate. I've never had a truck get 18.5 before ANYTIME.

18.5????? HOOOOOOOOOLLLLLLLLLLLY SHEETTAKE!!!! On the highway with my 4.6, 3.55 gears, 4r70, 2WD, doing 75 - 80, I'll get 16.4. BUUUUUT, that's with the oversized tires (265/75). I'm not sure what it was with the orig. tires (255/70) I forgot. Is there anyway to figure out what it really is? I'm going on a road trip tomorrow about 100 mi one way. Hopefully we'll take my dad's Ranger , dorky as hell but 28 mpg!! But he drives sooooooo damn slooooow.

That's good mileage for an 01. You can can get great fuel economy from this engine if you drive smart. It's a lot of how you drive, road/weather conditions, fuel and your tires.
I can squeeze 21 MPG from my 5.4L FX4 Screw if I drive 55 MPH on the highway. The faster I go, the worse the mileage gets.

I do have 31" tires on the truck also. And yes, I adjusted for the speedo error and even verified the mileage with a gps and on a map. I am assuming the 3.31 rear end has a lot to do with it. No other mods on the truck and bought it used about 6 months ago. Here I was thinking it was a gas hog....of course it is when I'm drivin around town.
