granatelli MAF, any one using 1?
Hi, I just got signed up and could use some info. Is any one running a granatelli MAF on there 01-03 f-150 5.4l. I need to know if you need to reprogram your computer to use it.
I have spent the last 2 days reading on this sight and haven't seen anybody talking about them. Are they worth using? Any info would be great, Thanks

Save your $$. The best bet is to read as much as possible before buying...... saves in the long run.
Start looking over the Chips and Programming threads, that is the best place to start your modifications.
I had another brand aftermarket MAF, and switched back to stock for custom tuning. Ford MAFs are good. LOL

I had one for several years. Worked great. The key is to get one that is properly set up for your vehicle. Unlike other aftermarket MAFs, this one can be calibrated for your setup and you will get nice improvements all around. Many people trash them, but they have no real experience with them. Yes, they can cause a problem, IF you do not have it set up by GMS for your vehicle configuration. They are a little pricey, though, like $350. I would spend the money on an Xcal2 and a Troyer tune. Check out the Chips and Programming section.

Thanks for the info. I had picked one up on Ebay for around $140. It came off a 03 f-150 5.4 I was hoping I could bolt it right up. I have sen a lot of talk on the xcal2 they sound like the way to go. With this MAF comming off a 03 should I still look into sending to granatelli to get it set up for my 02?
On the xcal2, i'm looking into getting a maganaflow Y-pipe and 3" exaust as well as a air intake. Should I hold off on the xcal2 intill i'm ready to put it all on so it could be tuned for every thing? I'm looking for better gas millage more than HP.
On my old 94 4.0 ranger I did a home made 3" air intake and a 2.5" flowmaster and gained 4 mpg. I was hoping for a simular gain on my 02 f-150.

Call GMS to see if it is set up for your truck. They are different if you have a cold air intake. I would give Mike Troyer a call and discuss your options. I know he will give you a deal a member, and when you buy exhaust and intake with the Xcal2. And BTW, mileage gains are not guaranteed, and are not always attainable with a lot of these mods. It's more about your driving style.

Put it back on ebay! I had one on my 2001 4.6 when I took it to the dyno, the operator of the dyno looked at my mod sheet and said that thin will cost yo 20 horsepower. I just happend to have the stock one in the truck and he proved it to me. I gained 23 hp putting the stock mass air back on, also it made the truc run dangerously lean. Luckily I baught it from Summit racing and when I called them with the problem they took it back and refunded the purchase price. The dyno operator said he had seen that many times on Fords and GM veh. he was a GM custom tuner and said that the transfer funtions on the Granetelli were very hard to work with even in a custom tune application.
