Best Way to Retire the Old Ford?

Hello All,

I have an 95 F150 extended cab with 158k miles on it and a fiberglass cap. The engine still runs strong and starts up on the first crank but she got some other troubles. Rear main seal leak, tranny is acting up just a little bit, one of the fuel pumps has bitten the dust, cracked windshield, and some body rust. I recently got into a minor front end collision but because of the angle it bent the arm that supports the front suspension (the one that runs from below the spring back to a rubber bushing connected to a piece of sheet metal running roughly parallel to the chassis).

A shop wants $750 to replace these arms with used arms and there is still the potential for it to need ball joints.

Since these arms are bent they have essentially rendered the truck un-drivable but it can be driven slowly and carefully.

What is the best way to get rid of a truck like this?

Tom

Donate it and take the tax write off.

Here's one of many:

Just Google "car donation"

Sell the cap seperately.
Find out what year range it will fit to increase the buyer base.

The donation plan is good depending upon your tax situation.
I had planned to donate a similiar vehicle, when I figured my total writeoff someone offered me that amount upfront and I didn't have to wait until filing time.

I was told they did away with the charity loop hole. Now you can only write off exactly what the charity sells the truck for or what they ultimately get for it. I've heard from an accountant that you actually have to wait till they dispose of it and send you a form in the mail and they usually do it for much less than book. If that were the case I would gladly write it off at book value.

Any other suggestions?

Thanks, didn't know the IRS had changed that.

I'd figure your truck to be worth about 2k and then start deducting the issues.
Your honest assessment doesn't leave much.

I'd have a hard time pouring $750 into it hoping to recoup.

You could try to part it out and what's left take to the scrap yard if you have the time and energy.

Time and energy are an issue. Right now there is a local business that is letting park my truck there. If I start ripping parts off it I am sure they would ask me to move it and I don't have anywhere else to take it.

I'm looking for some good ideas here. I'd like to ultimately get $800 for it.

Talking

Hmm...consider this. You say it will cost $750 to fix the front end. Replacing the rear main seal would probably be about $500...it cost me $300 in 1994 when I had the same thing replaced in my '85 300 straight six. For $1200-$2000ish you could outright replace your motor. The upper end of that range should very well give you a much more powerful version than you already had. So, what are we looking at here, say $3000 max, maybe as cheap as $1300? Stop by the stealership sometime and see what a new truck will cost ya. How big of a monthly payment would you like?

I know this doesn't answer your question. As far as where to simply get rid of it, call the local wrecking yards. You will probably be able to get $400-$600 out of them for it. They might even come haul it off for you. If they say they will only haul it off and not pay you anything for it, call somewhere else. I think patience will be your friend.

You could sell it to someone, but what are you going to tell them?

Just my two cents,
Mike

If you're familiar withe ebay you could try scrapping it and selling it off bit by bit. While this isn't the most time or labor efficient method, it's almost guaranteed to give the best yield. Definetly sell the cap seperately, you could get $200 right there if it's in nice shape.

Otherwise I'd just call some local junkyards. Say you'll sell them it for $500 and not a cent less(make sure to tell them it runs). If they offer you some low-ball offer or nothing at all, play this little game. Give one of your buddies the exact model/year of the truck, and tell them to call the junkyard and ask if they have any (your truck) there, they want it's engine and rear axle or something. Too bad, they don't have any.Make sure your buddy leaves his number since he's really interested in getting a used motor. A couple days later, call the same junkyard back, and put the offer back on the table. They'll fall over themselves to get it from you. I haven't done this, but one of my buddies did and got more than he originally offered.

Sell it on ebay, autotrader, cars.com, local paper... and state needs restoration, if nothing, and od dont want to fixit, wrecker yard might take it, but I'm with everybody else should part it out, if the interior is in good condition then sell that.

I'm slowly working toward the engine, soon there will be only the engine and trans setting there. Cheaper than renting a cherry picker Already turned the bed into a trailer to drag the rest of this junk to the scrape yard

Still using the same blade in the sawsall after hacking the bed off. Best 3 bucks I spent in a long time.
