codereader for rough idle?

Our f150 has a rough idle, in drive with brake on, pulls fine, drives fine

will a bad COP throw an error code? we get no lights on the dash, we had the dealer change the oil yesterday and now it's LOTS worse, it did not start for me today the first try (after warmed up)

I'm pretty sure I have coil problems, is there a cheap code reader that will check for COP failures?

truck is a 2004 F150 lariat supercrew with the 5.4 triton

No. If the fault causes the SES to come on, then a cheap code reader may be able to pull the code(s). Without any set codes, a cheap code reader is useless.

FWIW, your 04 requires a CAN-OBDII reader/scan tool.

Save the bucks and go to AutoZone ... they will read the codes for you

Most AutoZones have not upgraded their code readers to CAN-OBDII. Call ahead and ask first.

If you're still under warranty take it in to the dealer. I had the same problem with my 2005. They reflashed the PCM for a transmission update and personally I think there was something else in that update for the starting issues (the tech couldn't tell me because he said they weren't informed what all was in the update). It seems to have mostly fixed my truck although it still does it every once in a great while.
