Smog/Air pump

Hello, this is my first post and I hope I am in the right place. I just bought a 1991 Ford F150 XLT, 305 EFI, 2X4, Automatic. While inspecting the engine, I found that there is a hose that goes nowwhere. The configuration is: smog/air pump>hose>canister>hose>?. The hose that comes from the pump to the cannister is similar to a rubber radiator hose, only it is about 1" in dia. The hose on the other end (actually the side)has been cut and I can not find where it should attach to. That hose is of a different material and is corrigated. The pump is sucking air through the hose and I am thinking that it should be connected to the manifold somewhere. I am not a mechanic by any means, but I believe this is smog equipment related. Any advise will be greatly appreciated. I believe this truck was sold new in Gary Indiana if this will help. Thank you in advance

Ford has never made a 305ci - that's a GM engine. And EFIs are typically described in metric sizes, partially to differentiate them from carb engines. You probably have the 5.0L.

The hose you are referring to is most likely the tube that draws air from ports in the rear of the heads (not the manifold). If your motor is stock, there is a tube that runs horizontally from one head to the other, and has a point near the center where the tube in question connects. If the heads on your engine are not the originals, they may not have the ports for the air tubes, so the installer left the hose open. If this is the case for you, just plug the hose and clamp it. It should run fine without it.

There is no hose that "draws air from the heads" because there is no air in the heads to be drawn out. Only fuel (air + gas) and exhaust. The secondary air system pushes air INTO the exhaust to react with unburned gas. Plugging the hose will have no effect on the way the engine runs.

Thank you all for your speedy replies. Steve83, the third image from your first reply shows the hose at issue coming from the left side of the silencer/filter. The corrigated one. http://www.supermotors.net/vehicles/...y/media/252396 Where does that one go, and will it be ok to plug it, or leave it open. And I thank you for correcting me, the engine is a 5.0, not a 305. My head was up my tailpipe.

That's the air INtake for the filter, which then goes to the pump & into the exhaust. Your original post had them backward. Yes, it's supposed to be open. I tuck mine into the fender so it's less likely to pick up water from the fan (when I ford), but the factory just leaves it lying on top of the wheelwell.

If you REALLY want to make someone have a bad day, tell them that's where they are supposed to spray oil in for the smog pump.

The oil destroys the carbon vanes in the pump, it will sieze up in no time, throw the belt, and leave the stuck.

BWAHAHAHAHA!!!
