The 300 I6's Distributor Pin Sheered Again

Hey, I finally got my truck towed back to my house, and took a look at it. I believe the distributor pin (not sure if thats what its actually called) sheered again, which has happened about 4 times already since I've had the truck. I'm assuming this because it's acting like it did the other 4 times, where it will turn over and over fine, but not start. If it is that pin again, what would be causing it to keep sheering? would it be a problem with the crank?
Thanks

you'd prolly be better of posting in the pre 97 forum , you'd get some fast feedback that way

Only a bad distributor will cause the pin to shear, but don't assume that's what happened. Does the rotor turn smoothly when the engine is cranking? Have you checked the ignition timing?

Youre right, i shouldn't assume lol...and yes, it turns smoothly and I had just done the timing about a month ago...
When I first broke down, it turned over very irregularly, slow at first, then fast, then slow...but once it colled down, it turned over fine... this is what happened the other four times, so that is why i figured it was the pin again...either way, it would be good to know...lol
a friend of mine said it could be a problem with the crank...but I decided to double check on that...
Thanks for the info once again

not sure on this motor but the distributer on the 8cyls used to turn the oil pump with a shaft off the bottom gear. Perhaps its the pump and not the distributers falt.

No, check it NOW to find out if the distributor has jumped time.

You're right. I forgot about the oil pump. :o It's possible that it's shearing the pin. If the distributor spins freely by hand when removed, then the oil pump is the only other thing that would overload the pin.

ding ding ding!! that is the problem. the oil pump is the problem. It is putting to much strain on the pin. Now the big question is.... are you putting the correct pin in the gear? You can't put just any roll pin in the distributer gear. Make sure you are using one to Ford's specs.
