Question Ring Job - 1999 F150 5.4L

Has anyone had to get a ring job done on a 1999 F150 5.4L? Just needing a ballpark cost estimate. Thanks.

We never hear of bad rings in these trucks. Most people are surprised to see how little wear there seems to be when the heads are pulled.

I'm not certain yet that it needs rings. The engine is using about 1.5 quarts between oil changes, but is not leaking or smoking. I just assumed it must the rings.

Every 3,000 miles. The truck has 119,000 miles on it.

Thats about what I'm using at 180,000 miles. Oil consumption is normal as it keeps the valves lubed

My 97 F150 5.4L uses about a quart between changes. I change it every 3000 miles with Mobil 1. It has used the quart since I switched to synthetic at about 30K. It now has 230K. What type of oil are you using?

Don't waste any money on a ring job. You are on the high side of usage but I would still consider this normal. Ford defines normal as 900 miles per quart.

I used Havoline for the first 90,000 miles or so. My mechanic recommended Castrol, so I switched. Sounds like you've had good luck with Mobil 1?

Yes I have had good luck with it. The truck runs great, and I figure if it aint broke, don't fix it. My Trailblazer SS has the 400hp LS2 in t it, and the oil filler cap says "use Mobil 1 5W30" on it. Somebody at GM thinks it is a decent oil as well.......
