Question Need help---ticking

Just got back from a camping trip and noticed my 2006 5.4 f150 had a really bad ticking coming from the engine (Passenger side) You can hear it when you start it up but when it idles down it goes away. You can really hear it when the camper is hooked up to the truck and a load is placed on the engine. This is the first time my truck has made this noise, anyone have an idea?
I dropped it off at the dealer so I'm sure whatever it is, its gonna be expensive. I was thinking it might be along the line of a noisy/loose valve lifter.

Anyone???

If it is more of a knock, could be a cam phaser. Do a search on "cam phaser" and read what some have had to say. I light ticking could be an injector.

ticking

I took my 04 fx4 in for the same thing exactly as you described, i purchased the extended waranty on my truck when i purchased it. I was told that it was normal???? and given an explanation that made no sense. It is really bad when i pull my boat. I can hear it when my windows are up and over top of my 35" mt tires. Sounds like it is coming from the floor of the passenger side

Well just talked to the dealer today and the problem was the exhaust manifold, it had a crack in it and thats what was causing the noise , especially when towing the trailer. Not what I was expecting to hear but at least its cheaper than my first guess.

Well, I'm dealing with the same thing, ticking from passenger side, Had a ford mechanic look it over (family friend)... said he's dealt with a few of these come through the dealership... could be "phaser", but more likely a broken Manifold bolt, apparently on the 04-up 5.4 3vavle engines this is becoming a common thing. Not so "cheap" of a fix. Dealership has been having to actually lift cab of truck off to work on manifold. Good design eh? and one more thing...Get this... Aftermarket oil filter. This is common. Guys get their oil changed at the local "lube-it" and they install a gen. oil filter... well, this is apparently making our trucks sound like diesel engines... something to do with air getting into the engine. The ford part is designed to not allow this... Another reason to use only FORD parts.

Yeah $hety, I got quoted $788 cdn to get the manifold fix and a new power steering pump hose replaced....cant complain too much, could be worst I guess. Thinking of trading it in when I get it fixed for a 2008 F350 Super duty Diesel

first off you could have gotten a set of headers cheaper than that. and the 6.4 powerstroke only gets 13mpg max from what i here.

Yeah the parts ARE cheap but the labor is another story, plus I want the 6.4 so I can do some long haul and mountain camping, the 5.4 just dont have the power in the mountains and my MPG's with the 5.4 might average 9-10 mpg's if I'm lucky when towing my 27' TT....

There you go - I'll take one w/low mileage - Not much luck there.

There trying to talk me into a new dodge one ton dually at work w/cummings - But MANN , I likes the International (7.3 )- Took one of those across the states a few times hauling vehicles on a neat little trailer. Never sweated a bit thru Jelico or PA w/that under the hood.
