5.4L in 4.6vin truck?
It doesnt sound unusual right. The heads have a 5.4L stamped and the #'s are verified 5.4L from machine shop. So now have a 5.4L in the truck and I was thinking it was a 4.6L. I thought it was a 4.6 because of all the 4.6 stickers and 4.6L engine cover, and the killer is I have coil packs and plug wires. The engine doesnt have coil over plugs. I was told by machine shop and dealer mechanics that all 5.4L have COP's, and this one doesnt. Stamped 5.4L and #'s, but no COP's. Anyone heard of this?

The stickers and cover are random, however 2000+ 4.6L are fitted with COP ignition systems.
I would verify the transmission next. If you have the 4r75 then the motor should be a 5.4. The 4.6 is fitted with the 4r70. If you have a 4r70 with an 5.4 then someone did a motor swap prior to you owning the vehicle.

Random
Like i said, verify the model of transmission and that will help.
We need some more info too. When you post make sure you include the year and any mods to the truck. As far as I am aware, the 5.4 liter was delivered with COP from the get go. Did you buy the truck new, used, etc..... If the motor is in fact swapped then the chances are who ever did it used the wiring harness from the 4.6 and the ignition system to boot (no pun intended there).
I understand the 5.4 had a different stall converter in the tranny because it makes much more torque below 2000 rpm than the 4.6 does. I am sure one of the geniuses on the site will chime in soon enough.

my truck is a 98 f150 with no mods. all stock. As far as identifing the trans model, what and where are the numbers location? I bought it used six years ago. I'm pushing 300,000 miles on it, without any real issues. The carfax for the truck said it was in a accident with minor damage. So possibly a motor swap could've happened.

The casting numbers on the heads are 5.4L, also there is 14 bolts on the left valve cover which indicates a 5.4L. I talked with a dealer technician and engine machine shop tech, and both of them said it is a 5.4L engine. Then I told them the ignition system on this engine is two coil packs and plug wires(4.6L setup). Both were perplexed by this setup, like they never heard of it before. I want to know if anybody has this setup and what are the cons? I've been running 4.6L plugs in the engine because I thought it was a 4.6 until recently. Is there any difference in plugs? Also, where can I look on the transmission to verify what transmission I have under there/ Thanks.

The trans pan should have a stamp or sticker on it
The only con to the plug wire set up is the wires run right behind the alternator, and will often get stray voltage induced into or out of the plug wires, and will cause a funny performance blurp. Other then that nothing wrong with tradition plug wires.

Enough already this is f_ing irratating
Here is a hands down way of being sure of which motor you have. Take a measure of the width of the intake manifold. The 4.6 and 5.4 have VERY different width intakes due to the blocks deck height. Post that approx measure and we will reply back.
