Engine Swap Help

Looks like my '97 5.4 has some internal issues. It smokes more as it warms up and the smoke now has a blue tint to it. Still misses, running on 7. Can someone tell me what year model engines would be an easy swap? Also, what year mileage engines are low maintenace (spark plug problems)? Gonna try to buy a whole vehicle and swap it out.

the late 03 5.4 has more threads in the heads so the plugs dont blow out. but any 97-03 5.4 or 4.6 will bolt right in but keep a 5.4 so you dont have to change the tunes in the computer. just look for an expedition or f150 5.4 within those years.

I wanna stay away from the ones that blow plugs out. I had a "97 and "01 5.4 truck before. Never any problems with these. Gonna try and buy a later model from salvage aution, jus wanna be sure i don't get the one with the sparkplug issues.

Then buy something other than a Ford or time sert it. I wouldn't let the blow out determine the year in that engine. Both 5.4L and 4.6L /97 -03 use the same chamber threads. They changed late 03.

Head over here for your motor. See what's available in your area, just type in your zip -

Yea, it's a pretty cool way to find a motor or trans close to home. Great database locator.

Get it firing on all 8 if you can. I would compression test something like that. Misfiring shouldn't result in smoking. Rings and valves most likely.

Make sure the PCV system is clear. Motorcraft valves work the best in these things.

Get a compression check done.

That engine may have lived the good life already. You see that happening right before your eyes.
