Blown Plug in 02 5.4 Need help finding timeserts

Hello all i have just recently blown my second spark plug in this truck. The first one blew around 80k. I had repaired this myself with a normal Heli-Coil and (knock on wood) has held together so far. Tonight i was driving home and blew another. This time on the passegener side bank(the very front one).

I live in dallas and was wondering if i should just do another helicoil or do the timesert. BUT I do not have the money to buy the timesert kit as i have seen prices over 400 dollars.

So is there anyone or place I can borrow a kit from and purchase the insert? Or should i just do another helicoil? Also it took out the coil pack as usual. How much are they running a piece these days?

Thanks in advance i need help ASAP!!! This is my only vehicle and i only have today(thursday) off and dont have another day off until next week.

Jeremy

Contact member "Galaxy", he rents the kit.

IMMEDIATELY retorque the rest of the plugs to 28 ft/lb.

You can get a full set of 8 new coils on Ebay for about $80 shipped - look for DG-508's, the 2 reputable vendors we know of are Global Automotive and Uneek Supply.

If that helicoil blows out, you will probably have to contact the guys at www.blownoutsparkplug.com or find someone that has the BigSert kit.

Thanks guys unfortunately it was a lil too late. I have already bought and installed the heli coil brand insert sleeves. Someone told me the torque was 7-14 ft/lbs and ur saying 28... I torques this to 12 ft/lbs based off what they said. Should I retorque it to 28?

I give those a year, -MAX. Their bad news in Fords, you'll be doing it again, soon. I suggest you do a little research. the info above was provided to you by people who have, - just an FYI.

What really is the difference between the timeserts and the insert I bought at oreily's? Yes the kit is made by helicoil but it is a steel insert just like the timesert is.

O really? You sure about that? I mean absolutely 3 years? Because the record for Helicoil is 2 years in a modular 4 thread head. That's from just one user here. The rest haven't lasted half that long.

Don't ask for info if you can't handle it. Yea, your torque is wrong as well.

Yes it has lasted that long. And yes i can handle the advice.
I do however appreciate u bringing the torque to my attention and readjust all of the plugs. I have found alot of very useful info here ad i appreciate that from everyone which is why i still frequent here.

Im not trying to be hostile just wanted some answers. Still wondering what the diff is between the two inserts tho

- I meant to give you a hard time, but don't take it too personal ~ Thanks for your appreciation, that goes along way

If you used anti-seize, reduce torque by 30%. So around 20' lbs with/ -28' lbs without.

The 3 years your referring to is a plug chamber in a 97-02 4.6L/5.4L ? Need to clarify that, - it is the longest I have heard of in one of these heads.

Materials used in the a Heli-Coil kit lack durability/longevity, -it's more less a cheap fix, -cheap in every way. If your still running one, I may be leaking. It hasn't been strong enough in the past, -unless something has changed? Nah, I would have heard of by now (3 years back) - Google it, - and you'll most likely be brought back to a thread here lol.

Good Luck , I hope it lasts, -If not, Galaxy rents the tools I believe (that saves you some cash), you just purchase the Serts.

Yep...I'm still in business! Like mentioned, unless something has changed, the heli-coil is just a thread replacement. The TimeSert is a sleeve that goes into a completely new hole created in the head and has a unique lockng device to hold it in place. The helicoil replaces threads in a damaged hole. The TimeSert replaces the hole alltogether for lack of a better term. You always stand a chance of a helicoil failing and backing out, always. A TimeSert's not coming out on it's own. Plus, you're not gonna put a TimeSert in with basic hand tools.

The factory torque spec is WHY the plugs blow out. Use only Motorcraft platinum plugs with nickel-plated threads, NO ANTISEIZE, and torque them to 28 ft/lb. I don't have a CLUE what torque you should use in a helicoiled hole, but I'm assuming 28 is fine in a Timesert.

I know I've posted this quite a bit, but I put my Helio-coil in at about 92K, I currently have almost 260K. I've forgotten what year I installed it, but it has at least been 6 or 7 years ago. Still holding just fine. Cost $14 for a kit that contained 2 inserts. Did it myself in the garage. Didn't even have a drop light. If it blows out, I'm sure I got my money's worth a long time ago......

Thanks for all ur help guys. Would a major tool distributor (snap-on, matco, cornwell, mac) Sell the Timesert kits? I wanna have one of these on tap in case another one goes in the future. After watching the vid on the Timesert site i understand better now. I wanted to do this to begin with but couldnt sacrifice the downtime getting the kit. Can anyone reccomend a good torue for this helicoil tho? Getting a lil paranoid about it HAHA

No, the big tool companies will not carry TimeSert. Only direct from them or an authorized distributor...or me. At the risk of a cheap push for renting, I do not recommend buying a kit. The odds are in favor of never needing the kit again. Pretty expensive "just in case" scenario.
