Engine misfire cylinders 4 and 5

So i originally was told that one of my pre cats was blown out, causing my gas mileage to be in the dumps at 13. Ford inspected the truck and said that its misfiring on cylinders 4 and 5, and want to replace the coil packs and plugs. $425. My mechanic says the packs are $94 each and the plugs are $11. So he can get me out the door at about $300. Truck never threw a code, which surprises me. Also, was told that this is a common problem on these trucks and that the other coil packs will eventually go bad too.

oh HELLLLLLL NO dude. I wouldnt doubt they went up. mine just did 4 and 8 but it was obvious cuz it missed like a ****. BUT if you have the slightest mechanical experience you can do this yourself. Plugs may be a little tougher(how many miles on plug) if in fact you have alot of miles on them and dont feel confortable then yeah i'd take it somewhere then coil packs will be easy cuz they'll already have them off. but if your plugs are fairly new you wont need them you'll only need coil which is like a 10mm socket(cant remember) and unplugging the wiring harness and your done. I was told you have to remove fuel rails, but I didnt. I've heard sometimes they all will go out very soon when others do then i've heard some just lose one or two. If you have the money do all 8 its def wont hurt anything. But if your tight on cash like I am i did them as they went up. I also got no codes but would just unplug them one as a time and which ever one i unplug and the motor ran the same, that was it! good luck. $94 seems extremly high. I think I paid right around $60

I wont be doing it myself. Prices here in Cali will be higher than in Maryland, unfortunately.

Take it somewhere else. You don't have coil packs on that engine. The 5four never used them and the V8's haven't used them period since 00/01. The 4.6L's and 4.2L's used coil packs at one time.

damn, coils here are 65 each. thats why i do work myself, i dont have 425 bucks to shell out to hopefully fix the problem,

when my dad had his f150 he spent $1600 trying to fix the missfire that did it for me!!

The price is correct tho, - $97 per dealership coil,- for CoilOverPlug (COP) systems.

The same OEM style coil on the internet is like $9.66. They are identical. I did a comparison, inside and out, more than once lol. They did improve these coils since 97, just the housings and connector; - their thicker on top to discourage stress fracture (cracking) which promoted failure of course and the connector has been reinforced for the "Breakage of the Connectorage" issues in the past.

Absolutely, - it's exactly as I posted earlier. 5.4L's NEVER used coil packs. The only modular V8 that used packs was the 4.6L , -until 00/01. Some 4.6L's had them in 2000, some didn't. But yea, all 5fours run Fords high tech CoilOverPlug (COP) systems. 8 Dedicated coils, 1 per cylinder, no packs. Packs are in charge of more than one cylinder.

Well i got the truck back. I pretty much got stuck having to have Ford do the work, because i was being charged $125 for the diagnostic fee, since it was for a different issue. I would have loved to buy that 8 pack on ebay that Jbrew showed, but #1 it was too late, and #2 i have had such terrible luck with aftermarket stuff, that im very skeptical about doing it for engine parts. Also, mechanics out here will not warrantee a product that you purchased yourself, so i just went ahead and had ford do it. They replaced "AA coil #4 and #5 ASY-Ignition and 2 spark plugs. Pretty much cost the same by having them doing it vs going to my mechanic. I will tell you the truck runs a big smoother now, with the idle being fixed. Gas mileage was being effected due to the misfire, correct? But heres my question: What happens if/or when this happens again to different cylinders? There is no way im paying what i did for this to happen to 6 more cylinders. Truck has 62,xxx miles on, so what are the chances that this will happen again? Thanks guys, your all such huge help!!

well a monkey could do cylinders 1 through 4 because there is nothing blocking them. So if its that side do it yourself.
